Introduction
The objective is to design a taxi meter and simulate it using the Proteus ISIS. In this assignment, students
are required to
• Design the typical data acquisition system.
• Design the power supply to provide stable and specific voltage output.
• Analyze a hardware design problem and produce suitable design solution using microcontroller
and human/physical interfaces.
• Write program using assembly language for the microcontroller.

Task and Mark distribution:
SECTION A
You are required to choose two currently used microprocessors (from two different manufacturers).
Processor manufacturers include Intel, AMD, ARM, Motorola, Fujitsu, VIA Technologies, etc. Each of the
two processors chosen should be suitable for use in a different class of computers (e.g. PCs/Laptops,
Servers, and embedded systems) from the second processor. Conduct research with the aim of analysing,
as well as comparing and contrasting the design of these processors. A report of this analysis and
comparison/contrast, with recommendations, should be compiled and submitted. You are expected to
conduct research external to lectures (e.g. finding evidence to support your claims from manufacturer
websites, journal/conference articles, etc.).
Research should focus on performance, cost and energy consumption of these microprocessors.
Aspects of design to consider should include, but not limited to, instruction set architecture, internal
structure, interconnection architecture, cache organisation, error correction, memory management and

Assignment Description
The purpose of the formal report is to comprehensively communicate results of your experiment using your pre-lab report as a draft. Formal reports must include the following sections.
The instructor will conduct a preliminary review of each report to evaluate technical writing skills. Upon the discretion of the instructor, reports that do not significantly satisfy the criteria outlined in the Technical Writing Evaluation Checklist will earn a grade of 50 with no further consideration.
Cover Page (5 points)
The formal report requires a specific cover page which is available on Moodle.
Table of Contents (5 points)
The Table of Contents lists all section and sub-section titles and the page numbers that correspond to the beginning of every section and sub-section. Its format should conform to that specified in the Chicago Manual of Style.
Overall Report Quality (10 points)
A technical report should be written with an emphasis placed on format, presentation of tables and figures, and overall writing skills. See document titled Technical Writing Evaluation Checklist for more detail.
Summary (15 points)
The Summary is limited to 300 words and does not include nor reference tables, graphs, or figures that may be included in the body of your report. Its purpose is to communicate key messages excerpted from other sections of your report, which is why it is written last. It must explain why the experiment was conducted, its scientific and/or practical relevance, results of calculations, and a brief discussion and conclusion about the results.This section must stand alone.You must assume that it is the only part of the report that will actually be read by your supervisor or client.

The H bridge was chosen as a method of controlling the motors as it supplies efficient control over forwards and backwards on each motor.
The image shows a basic diagram of a h bridges when all the switches are open there is no current going through the H bridge and the motor does not move.
The diagram above shows the 4 switching elements namely low side left, low side right, high side left and high side right. The motor changes its direction according to the element that is switched on. For example, if the switch of high side left and low side right is turned on then the motor will rotate forward as with the flow of the current to the ground through motor coil.
the h-bridge is preferred for interfacing DC motor with the microcontroller for the control of direction of the rotation and speed of the motor. H-bridge the name is derived from the real shape of the circuit of the motor. The h-bridge has 4 switching elements which are shown.

It is an electronic circuit which enable voltage to be applied across a load in either direction.
It allows a circuit full control over standard electronic DC motor. That is with an H- bridge , logic chip
H- bridges are available as integrate circuits.

How the motor operates
The red line shows the current path if the top right and the bottom left switches are closed. This will send the motor spinning in one direction for example forward. If the opposite switches were to be closed then the motor would go into reverse.

The outputs in L293D are motors which consist of 2 inputs and 2 outputs each. Motor 1 has the input 1 and 2 and motor 2 has the inputs 3 and 4. Likewise, the motor 1 has outputs 1 and 2 and motor 2 has outputs 3 and 4. Logic 1 and enable 1 will enable the inputs 1 and 2 and outputs 1 and 2 which means motor 1. Furthermore, enable 2 will enable inputs and outputs 3 and 4 which are motor 2.

It is a dual H-bridge motor driver.
Can control two motors.

Out put current of 600 mA and peak output current 1.2 per channel.
Power supply can be as large as 36 volts.
for protection of circuit from back EMF output diodes are included within the L293D.
Circuit Connections
Pin 1 and 9 are the 2 enable pins in which pin 1 enables motor 1 and pin 9 enables motor 2. The L293D has four output pins connected to its input terminals and various logics can be provided to control the motor’s direction. The motor 1 would be connected across output 1 and 2 which are pin 3 and 6 while the motor 2 would be connected across output 3 and 4 which are pins 11 and 14. Pins 4, 5, 12 and 13 are connected to the ground while pins 16 and 8 are connected to VCC=5V.

Cover Page (5 points)
The formal report requires a specific cover page which is available on Moodle.
Table of Contents (5 points)
The Table of Contents lists all section and sub-section titles and the page numbers that correspond to the beginning of every section and sub-section. Its format should conform to that specified in the Chicago Manual of Style.
Overall Report Quality (10 points)
A technical report should be written with an emphasis placed on format, presentation of tables and figures, and overall writing skills. See document titled Technical Writing Evaluation Checklist for more detail.
Summary (15 points)
The Summary is limited to 300 words and does not include nor reference tables, graphs, or figures that may be included in the body of your report. Its purpose is to communicate key messages excerpted from other sections of your report, which is why it is written last. It must explain why the experiment was conducted, its scientific and/or practical relevance, results of calculations, and a brief discussion and conclusion about the results.This section must stand alone.You must assume that it is the only part of the report that will actually be read by your supervisor or client.
The Summary section must briefly answer each of the following questions:

The H bridge was chosen as a method of controlling the motors as it supplies efficient control over forwards and backwards on each motor.
The image shows a basic diagram of a h bridges when all the switches are open there is no current going through the H bridge and the motor does not move.
The diagram above shows the 4 switching elements namely low side left, low side right, high side left and high side right. The motor changes its direction according to the element that is switched on. For example, if the switch of high side left and low side right is turned on then the motor will rotate forward as with the flow of the current to the ground through motor coil.
the h-bridge is preferred for interfacing DC motor with the microcontroller for the control of direction of the rotation and speed of the motor. H-bridge the name is derived from the real shape of the circuit of the motor. The h-bridge has 4 switching elements which are shown.

Circuit Connections
Pin 1 and 9 are the 2 enable pins in which pin 1 enables motor 1 and pin 9 enables motor 2. The L293D has four output pins connected to its input terminals and various logics can be provided to control the motor’s direction. The motor 1 would be connected across output 1 and 2 which are pin 3 and 6 while the motor 2 would be connected across output 3 and 4 which are pins 11 and 14. Pins 4, 5, 12 and 13 are connected to the ground while pins 16 and 8 are connected to VCC=5V.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied

Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

You are required to design a taxi meter around 16 series PIC
microcontroller and simulate your design
using the Proteus ISIS software on the PC side.
In minimum, the taxi meter should include the following
functions:
• Taxi fare calculation:
The fare starts at £5.00, when the total travel distance is shorter
than 3 miles, the total amount is
fixed at £5.00. When the total travel distance is longer than 3
miles, the amount increases by
£1.00 for a mile.
• Information display
Two types of information can be shown on one LCD display:
total fare of the taxi and the total
7. travel distance. Fare of the taxi will be displayed in the format
of XXX.X (each X indicates one digit).
The unit is pound(s). Total travel distance will be displayed
with the format of XXXX, the unit is
mile(s). Switching between these two types of information
display will be controlled by a push
button. Each display will stay on until the push button is
pressed again.
Suitable type of switch needs to be selected and used as the
input to start/stop the taxi meter. ‘ON state’
means that the trip starts and the taxi meter start to calculate the
fare and travel distance. ‘OFF state’
means that the destination arrived, and the taxi meter works in
the idle state.
Suitable sensor needs to be selected and used to measure the
travel distance. To make it simple, the
perimeter of the wheel of the car is assumed to be 1.6 m, and
therefore, 1000 cycles equal to one mile.
The power supply on the taxi is fixed +12V. You need to design
a power supply to provide suitable voltage
for your designed application.
8. You are encouraged to use other peripherals from the library to
expend the function of the system. (e.g.
decoders, latches, inverters, external memory cells, filters,
Temperature sensor etc.).
You are required to implement your design by writing program
for the microcontroller with either the
Assembly language or other higher level languages.
Coursework Requirements
1. Use a hierarchical design methodology to break the project
into a set of smaller modules which you can
eventually join together to produce the complete system. You
are expected to critically evaluate the
available components for your application and choose the best
suitable one. For example, what is the best
power supply structure for your design and what is the best
storage method for your design.
2. Assignment specification only provides the basic function for
the taxi meter. Produce a "more practical"
specification for the project. You will design a prototype to be
simulated on Proteus ISIS environment, so
bear in mind what is available to you.
9. 3. Your design should be of sufficient complexity to
demonstrate your skills, but not so overly complex
that you risk not completing the project within the allotted time.
For now keep it simple, add
"sophistication" when you have something that works.
5. Simulate and debug the design you create. Your designs need
be simulated for demonstration.
