Quantifier Race
In this class activity, students race to write down countable and uncountable nouns that
belong to different categories. They must also associate the nouns with quantifiers.
Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each student. This activity may also be
done in small groups.
Procedure
Give each student a copy of the worksheet.
Draw the students' attention to the top of the table. Point out that there are six columns with
quantifiers as headings. The headings also indicate which type of noun (countable or
uncountable) is used with each quantifier.
Explain that the students have to complete the rows with words that fit the categories you
are going to read aloud.
If necessary, remind the students of the rules for quantifiers and countable/uncountable
nouns.
Students have one minute to come up with a word for each heading and they must write only
one word per category.
If a student completes their entire row before the time is up, they say, "Stop" and the rest of
the class stops writing.
Students score one point for every grammatically correct and appropriate noun and two
points for every original noun - a noun that only one student has written.
Read out the first category from the list below. If nobody finishes after one minute, tell them
to stop.
1. Something you can see the classroom.
2. Something you have in your bedroom.
3. Something you eat or drink every day.
4. Something you can put in your pocket.
5. Something you can't live without.
6. Something you would like to buy.
7. Something you saw on the way to class today.
8. Something you had when you were a child.
9. Something you have in your kitchen.
10. Something you see in the street.
The students then give their answers.
Award the students points and then move on to the second category on the list.
The winner of the game is the student with the most points at the end.

  • 2. TEACH-THIS.COM Quantifier Race In this class activity, students race to write down countable and uncountable nouns that belong to different categories. They must also associate the nouns with quantifiers. Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each student. This activity may also be done in small groups. Procedure Give each student a copy of the worksheet. Draw the students' attention to the top of the table. Point out that there are six columns with quantifiers as headings. The headings also indicate which type of noun (countable or uncountable) is used with each quantifier. Explain that the students have to complete the rows with words that fit the categories you are going to read aloud. If necessary, remind the students of the rules for quantifiers and countable/uncountable nouns. Students have one minute to come up with a word for each heading and they must write only one word per category. If a student completes their entire row before the time is up, they say, "Stop" and the rest of the class stops writing. Students score one point for every grammatically correct and appropriate noun and two points for every original noun - a noun that only one student has written. Read out the first category from the list below. If nobody finishes after one minute, tell them to stop. 1. Something you can see the classroom. 2. Something you have in your bedroom. 3. Something you eat or drink every day. 4. Something you can put in your pocket. 5. Something you can't live without. 6. Something you would like to buy. 7. Something you saw on the way to class today. 8. Something you had when you were a child. 9. Something you have in your kitchen. 10. Something you see in the street. The students then give their answers. Award the students points and then move on to the second category on the list. The winner of the game is the student with the most points at the end.
