- is an electronic component that
offers opposition to the flow of current.
Identifying the Color-Coded Value
of Carbon Resistor
- A carbon resistor has four color
bands printed on its body that serves
as the color-coded resistance value.
- The unit of resistance is ohm and is
represented by the Greek letter omega
(Ω).

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Prayer Greetings Attendance
  • #3 Sign in at least 10 mins b4 the class starts All things must be prepared before joining tha class becoz we have just limited time Just turn on camera when you are told to do so Wear something that is comfortable but presentable Always turn ur mic off to avoid unnecessary noise Use raise hand button until you are recognized to speak Then enjoy learning
  • #12 The tolerance of a resistor is the maximum difference between its actual value and the required value and is generally expressed as a plus or minus percentage value.
  • #13 1. It is being used in most electronics appliances to limit the flow of current. Resistors are very common and are the cheapest electronic components in the market for so many years. Their features are so interesting and very colorful. That is why resistors are very popular among students studying electronics. There are different types of resistors, but the most commonly used one is the carbon resistor.
  • #14 Resistor color coded value is not absolute. The real resistance of the resistor is sometimes lower or higher than its color coded value but not to exceed its tolerance level. Resistance in any electric wire helps in manipulating the current that is flowing through the circuit. Also, it enables the measurement of current and voltage flowing through a circuit. Appliances such as electric heaters, electric ovens, and toasters all use resistors to turn current into heat, then using the heat lost from this resistor to warm the surrounding area. Protect against voltage spikes. Resistors also protect components against voltage spikes.
  • #19 So please take note of this that Only Gold and Silver are the 2 colors that can be found in the 4th band 4th band : TOLERANCE
  • #20 There are four color bands printed on the body of carbon resistor. Each color represents a number (0-9). To easily determine the first color, remember that color black is not used as first color or first digit because its figure is zero (0). While gold and silver is for third and fourth colors. If used as third color it signifies a multiplier. When used as fourth color it represents tolerance. The “left-hand” or the most significant color band is the band which is the nearest to a connecting lead with the color coded bands being read from left-to-right.
  • #23 Another example at jamboard…
  • #24 Therefore a 56,000 Ω stated resistance ± 5Ω tolerance means the resistor could range in actual value from as much as 58,800 to as little 53,200. Another example at jamboard
