Midwives are trained healthcare professionals who help women during labor, delivery, and birth. In ancient India, midwifery was performed by indigenous village dais who assisted during childbirth and acted as health consultants. Currently, midwives in India work to reduce maternal mortality, participate in maternal and child welfare initiatives, and provide coordinated, holistic care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The presence of skilled midwives is critical to achieving safe motherhood.
