Copyright protects creative works and gives the creator exclusive rights. Unauthorized use of a copyrighted work, such as reproducing, distributing, or adapting it, is considered infringement. In Malaysia, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act 1987. In one case, novelist Elias Idris sued filmmaker Yusof Haslam for copyright infringement over similarities between Idris' novel and Haslam's film in terms of plot, characters, and message. The court granted Idris an injunction, ordered the film copies be given to Idris, and required Haslam to pay profits and legal costs to Idris.
