BLOGGERS, ENSURE YOU ARE YOUR
AUTHENTIC SELF
.........AND AVOID COPYRIGHT ISSUES
BY GAIL LOCKYER
ENSURE YOU ARE YOUR AUTHENTIC
SELF

Writing articles for your newsletter, blog or even
on social media needs to be authentic and
original material from you.
Do not copy and paste from someone else unless
you have sought permission and give due
credit.
Your thoughts and your words are what really
counts to ensure you are your authentic self.
Tell the story from your heart, it’s your point of
view, your story.
Permission is usually needed to include copyright
material in a book or other publication.

www.halfdaypa.com.au

People using copyright material usually need to make
sure the creators are attributed and that they do not
use the material in a way that might be damaging to
the creator’s “honour or reputation”.
The moment an idea or creative concept is documented, on paper
or electronically, it is automatically protected by copyright. Because
it is automatic in Australia, there is no official registry or application
process for copyright protection.

www.halfdaypa.com.au

Copyright laws are broadly similar from
country to country, but if the material you
are editing is going to be published overseas,
your writer or publisher should not assume
that copyright will apply in exactly the same
way as here in Australia, specific advice from
a solicitor with the relevant expertise may be
needed or IP consultant.
Rights
vary
of the work.

The moment an idea or creative concept is documented, on paper or
electronically, it is automatically protected by copyright. Because it is
automatic in Australia, there is no official registry or application process
for copyright protection.

Copyright protection is provided under the
Copyright Act 1968 and gives you exclusive
rights to license others in regard to copying
your work, performing it in public, broadcasting
it, publishing it and making an adaptation of
the work.
Rights vary according to the nature of the work but remains valid for 70 years
from the date of publication or the death of the author.
See more information on the Government website.

Copyright protection is provided under the

it and making an adaptation of the work.
Throughout that month, I am collecting ideas, articles that are akin
to my topic and researching so I can rewrite the topic in my own
words at the appropriate time.
Think about the squirrel gathering nuts until he needs them, storing
them safely until the need arises. Same with your content.

www.halfdaypa.com.au

So how do you come up with fresh new
content over and over again? Put your
thinking cap on and the ideas will come!
I have a content marketing schedule mapped
out for the year on a month by month basis
which gives me a clear indication on my
target topic for that month which eventually
becomes the topic of the monthly
newsletter.
A few ideas on that:
•Sales – What are the most common objections
and counters that work?
•Customer Service – Common product or service
issues, product feature ideas and both
complaints and areas your business excels can
provide really useful ideas.
•Surveys - ask your customers
•Invite Guest Bloggers - this needs to be handled
carefully but a great way to interact with others
that form part of your business. Think about
contractors or suppliers. You will also need to
view article prior to submitting it.

An excellent source for gaining insights from team
members directly connected to your buyers and
customers can reveal priceless ideas for effective
content marketing.
Tapping into frontline employees is particularly useful as
they are at the coal face of your business and often get
direct feedback.
If this sounds too difficult, you can always outsource
your writing for original content to a copywriter.
There are many writers offering unique articles that
will sell them for a nominal fee.

www.halfdaypa.com.au

If there is a particular business or website that has
like-minded thoughts to your own then you can
always gather RSS Feeds from them just as the
stimulation for your own original works.
View www.copyscape.com to check your articles.
Google will certainly love your original content too. It will
do wonders for your SEO.

If you are unsure you’re not breaching copyright, then
there is a great website you can use for free to scan for
any breaches, ensure there was no plagiarism and your
content is truly your authentic self.
