 “The exclusive legal
     right, given to an
originator or an assignee
      to print, publish,
perform, film, or record
    literary, artistic, or
musical material, and to
 authorize others to do
         the same”
 Protects many types of work: music,
    photography, film, recordings, artwork etc.
 No one can copy or use work without copyright
    owner’s permission
 Determines who may adapt the work to other
forms, who may perform the work, who may
    financially benefit from it.
 Copyright can protect the artwork of your logo.
You could also register the logo as a trademark
 The IPO is an institution that provides the right
type of protection for your creation or invention

 IP may be a brand, an invention, a design or
    song.

 IP can be owned, bought, and sold.
 Right to Authorise - These rights include the
right to authorise others to produce or
reproduce your work as well as the right to
broadcast your work. (Cross media synergy)
 Protection - Copyright prevents your work from
being stolen or misused by others.
 Income - The artist, management company, and
record label does not lose out on their rightful
    income (Exchange)
 Inability to Share Work (Marketing and
                      Distribution)

Copyright does not allow you to openly permit
others to use your work or to distribute it, even if
they are not doing it for profit. This can mean that
your work is disseminated slowly or not at all.
 “The unauthorised use or reproduction
    of copyrighted or patented material”
 Each year, the industry loses about $4.2 billion to piracy
    worldwide
 the creative artists lose.
Musicians, singers, songwriters and producers don’t
get the royalties and fees they’ve earned.
 Record companies lose. 85% of recordings released
don’t even generate enough revenue to cover their
    costs.
 Consumers lose - illegally downloaded music drives up
the costs of legitimate product for everyone
The Recording Industry Association of
America (RIAA) is the trade organisation that
supports and promotes the creative and
financial vitality of the major music
                     companies
