TOPIC:
PROMOTING
HEALTH AND
SAFETY
Safety
 Work performed to avoid any damage of worker, tools, materials is called
safety
Importance of Safety
 A serious workplace injury or death changes
lives forever – for families, friends,
communities, and coworkers too. Human loss
and suffering is immeasurable. Every person
who leaves for work in the morning should
expect to return home at night in good health.
Can you imagine the knock on the door to tell
you your loved one will never be returning
home? Or the phone call to say he’s in the
hospital and may never walk again? Ensuring
that husbands return to their wives, wives to
their husbands, parents to their children, and
friends to their friends — that is the most
important reason to create a safe and healthy
work environment.
Methods of Promoting Safety
Concepts
 These are three methods of promoting safety concepts in
workers
1) Propaganda
2) Education
3) Training
1) Propaganda
Propaganda is a matter of using stickers, posters, organizing film shows, talk,
competitions with rewards, and so on.
 Film and Slides
 A film can tell the whole story of an accident, showing the environment,
how the dangerous situation erose, how the accident happened what
conseqeaces were and how it could have been prevented.
 Slides have some advantages over film, slides can be projected for as long
as desirable, more detailed explanations can be given and questions can
be asked.
 Talks, Lectures and Conferences
 With talk lectures much depends on the speaker’s understanding of the
audience. If he knows how to hold the attention of those who listen to him,
he may some influence on them.
 Talk offer an opportunity for direct contact between speaker and audience,
which is great advantage.
 Competitions
 Competitions are usually organized between factories working under
similar conditions or between different departments of the same factory.
The department showing the least results is usually awarded a prize (for
instance a cup) which remains in that department until the end of next
competitions does not depend on who is the winner, but they will achieved
in accident rates in the factory as a hole
 Exhibitions
 Exhibitions are a means of acquainting workers in a very realistic way with
hazards and means of eliminating them.
 Safety Literature
 The types of safety propaganda so far described can also be used for
illiterate workers. Documents, unless they consist entirely of pictures, are
only of value for workers who can read
 In many countries safety magazines appear regularly containing illustrated
articles describing new safeguards
2) Education
In recent years there has been a growing realization in a number of countries
of the advantages of giving some industrial safety education in school and
college so as to ensure that entrants into industry have at least and idea of
the dangers awaiting them and the means by which they can help to obviate
them.
3) Training
Everyone who works for you needs to know how to work safely and without
risks to health. You must provide clear instructions and information, and
adequate training, for your employees.
Workers has the right level of information on:
 hazards and risks they may face, if any ;
 measures in place to deal with those hazards and risks, if necessary;
 how to follow any emergency procedures.
Stop check!
Some of your staff may have particular training needs, for example:
 new recruits;
 people changing jobs or taking on extra responsibilities;
 young employees, who are particularly vulnerable to accidents;
 health and safety representatives.
 There are particular laws relating to the protection of young people at work and the
functions and training of health and safety representatives.
 Remember that staff will need extra training if you get new equipment or working
practices change.
