Conducting a self-audit of data protection complianceFintan Swanton
The document outlines the process and key areas of focus for conducting a data protection audit. It involves interviewing departments to assess compliance with data protection legislation and policies. The audit aims to identify weaknesses, commend strengths, and recommend remedial actions. Key areas examined include data protection policies and procedures, data collection and handling processes, data sharing and security, staff training, and response to subject access requests.
Key highlights of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which organisations will need to consider when preparing for its coming into force on 25 May 2018.
The document summarizes changes to rules around using cookies and similar technologies to store information on users' devices. Starting on May 26, 2011, organizations will need to obtain user consent before storing cookies or similar files on a user's device. The new rules aim to increase privacy protections for internet users by requiring consent for any non-essential cookie use that could be intrusive to a user's privacy. Organizations should now audit what cookies they use, assess if any pose privacy risks, and decide how to obtain meaningful user consent going forward to comply with the new regulations.
International Chamber Of Commerce UK - EU Cookie Directive GuideKrishna De
The ICC UK Cookie guide provides guidance for website operators on obtaining informed consent from users for the use of cookies, in line with recent changes to UK privacy law. It categorizes cookies into four groups: strictly necessary cookies, performance cookies, functionality cookies, and targeting/advertising cookies. The guide aims to help operators identify which cookies they use and explain them to users, as well as help users understand cookie purposes. If widely adopted, the guide could standardize cookie information across sites and increase user understanding over time. It provides information in layers, from simple high-level descriptions to more detailed explanations, allowing those wanting more information to access it.

The EU's E-Privacy Directive regulates privacy and cookies. It requires user consent for cookies except if strictly necessary. Websites in the EU must obtain consent, but methods are unclear. Options include pop-ups, terms of service agreements, or browser settings. Websites should review their cookie usage and develop a cookie policy while guidance is developed.
The document discusses new EU regulations around the use of cookies for tracking users across websites. Some key points:
1. The regulations require users to provide informed consent before cookies can be used to track them, collect personal data, or access information already stored on their device.
2. Consent needs to include clear information on what data is being collected and how it will be used. Users also have rights around accessing and correcting personal data.
3. Marketers have options for obtaining consent like during opt-ins, on gated content, or through proactive outreach, but explicit consent is likely required before using cookies for tracking.
4. Non-compliance could result in enforcement action and loss
This document provides guidance on obtaining consent for cookies and similar technologies under the UK's Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. It finds that consumer understanding of cookies is generally limited. Websites must take steps like conducting a cookie audit and providing clear information to users to comply with rules requiring consent for storing or accessing information on users' devices. While initial compliance requires effort, the guidance expects it will become easier over time as user awareness and technical abilities improve.
The document provides recommendations for implementing Federated Access Management systems in accordance with the European Union Directive 95/46/EC on personal data protection. It recommends that home organizations and service providers only exchange non-personal data and identifiers when possible. If personal data is exchanged, it should be limited to only what is necessary. Both parties must inform users about what personal data is collected and how it is used. Home organizations must have a legal basis such as contractual necessity or user consent to share personal data with service providers.
Identity Federation: Citizen Consent and the Internet of Things - October 2017Guy Huntington
With nanotechnology, devices are shrinking down to an almost molecular level and have the ability to communicate wirelessly via the Internet. These devices are beginning to proliferate in almost all aspects of our lives be it medical, transportation, government, clothing, appliances, and so on.
Since device owners have to access many different systems to manage their authorization consents, it becomes unwieldly. This paper addresses the simple question of “How do I manage all my consents across a wide variety of different devices, suppliers, and their systems in one place?”
This document is an unofficial translation of a resolution issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Oman establishing regulations to protect the confidentiality and privacy of customer data for telecommunications licensees. It requires licensees to obtain customer consent to collect only necessary personal data and to use it only for the specified purpose. Licensees must implement security measures and policies to protect customer data and inform customers of any data breaches or security threats. Customers have rights to access, update and request deletion of their personal data stored by licensees. Licensees are prohibited from selling or sharing customer data without consent and must delete data within 3 months after a contract expires unless an extension is approved.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
