- 1. Conventions Representation of the band After looking at three different music videos of the same genre, we have found that bands within this genre are represented in a very similar way. Throughout the video, they will be portrayed as almost ‘heroes’ who in turn save people from becoming identical to one another. All the videos show how they can stay individual no matter how many people try to stop that. Also, we have found that, in all the videos, the artists are both represented as musicians but also as ordinary people. For example; during the live shots the bands are shown to be very professional and enthusiastic when it comes to their work, and, when in the fictional shots, the band is shown to be playful and immature, anchoring the idea that they all wanted to represent within their video; they are the same as every other person their age.
- 2. Conventions Editing In all the videos that we have analysed, the synchronicity of the editing seems to be very precise. For example, the pace of the cut in each of the videos seems to completely equal the pace of the music that is being played. Similarly, at the end of all the videos the cuts seem to be almost identical due to the fact that, in all the songs, the pace of the music begins to speed up. Because of this, all the videos feature a montage of the band mucking around and behaving as they normally would at the very end, before using the camera to slowly zoom out on the band as the last note begins to fade out.

Conventions Studio shots vs. fictional shots In all the videos they use a mixture of live and fictional shots, and we believe that this has been done to show both the professional live and personal lives of the band members, as it shows them at work, but also them having fun. We also believe that it has been done so that the video can represent the narrative, but also to allow the audience to see the band within their comfort zone. The use of fictional scenes also helps the band sell more of their music because, if you make a memorable video, then people are going to remember the song as they associate it with the video.
- 4. Conventions Narrative? We have found that, within all the videos that we have looked at, the storyline of the song has been used by two of them but has been interpreted in different ways. For example, Save It For the Bedroom, is about a girlfriend cheating, and the video is all about people trying to solve their problems on a chat show, and Poppin’ Champagne is about falling to the celebrity lifestyle of partying and drinking, whereas the video is about how the band have not succumb to the stereotypical lifestyle and have instead changed themselves. However, Blink 182 do not use their narrative in any sense; All the Small Things is about a girlfriend, whereas the video is all about making fun of other stereotypical bands.
