Shamshi-Adad I conquered the city of Ashur between 1813-1791 BCE, making it his capital and expanding his control by conquering the wealthy kingdom of Mari. However, Hammurabi soon defeated Shamshi-Adad's successor, reducing Assyria to a vassal state under the control of the Babylonian Empire.
