The Consumer Protection Act was passed in 1986 to better protect the interests and rights of consumers in India. It establishes consumer dispute redressal forums at the district, state, and national levels to address complaints. The district forums are set up by state governments, while the state and national commissions are established by the respective governments. Anyone can file a complaint with the appropriate forum within 2 years of the issue arising. The complaint must include essential details about the complainant, opposite party, goods or services in question, and proof of purchase. The act defines key terms and aims to protect consumers from unfair trade practices, restrictive trade practices, defects, and deficiencies.
