The Abbey Junior School Choir

Charles Church Camberley Band
In Concert

Director of Music – Ruth Adams

Musical Director Robert Cherry
The Abbey Junior School is part of The
Abbey School Reading, an independent
school for girls from the ages of 3 – 18.
The Upper Junior (Years 5 & 6) Choir is
one of four choirs at The Abbey Junior
School. They meet once a week to
rehearse music in a variety of styles.
Throughout the year, the choir sings at
various festivals, concerts and school
events. Over the last eighteen months this
choir has won Woodley Festival,
performed in Symphony Hall Birmingham
in the National Festival of Music for Youth
and 30 members from Year Five sang at
The Royal Albert Hall at the beginning of
November in the Barnardo’s Young
Supporters’ Concert.
The Choir is
currently taking part in the ‘Britten and
Beyond Project’, which is being run by the
British Council and Music for Youth.
Through this we will develop a link with
the National Music School of Bulgaria.

Founded in 1960 the band flourishes today with around
30 members of all ages. Since 1983 we have enjoyed
sponsorship from Charles Church Developments Plc and
their continued support is greatly appreciated.
Throughout the summer we also play at paid engagements
to help cover the costs of running the band. Over the
years, the band has raised a considerable for Frimley Park
Hospital by carolling at The Meadows, and this year will
be no exception!

With special guests The Abbey Junior
School Choir

In 2007 the band commissioned a new composition called
Welsh Echoes to celebrate Geralt (Gerry) Hughes’ 90th
birthday. Gerry had led the band since it was formed until
2003, when he handed the baton over to Robert Cherry.
In 2010, the band celebrated its 50th anniversary with
several events, one of which was a trip to the Whit Friday
Marches. This experience was repeated two years later in
2012, and plans are afoot to make this a biennial
experience for the band.
In 2011, the band commissioned another new piece
entitled Cranborne Chase in memory of Libby Godden, a
long-serving solo horn player and training ensemble
leader. Today the training ensemble is ably led by our
assistant musical director Bob Pitts.
