COMPUTER
NETWORKS
A computer network is a set of
computers linked together for the
purpose of sharing resources and
exchanging data. The computers
may be connected by different
means such as cables, satellites,
and fiber optics. Prime examples
of the computer network are the
LAN (local area network) and the
Internet.

(LAN)
LANs connect computers and
other peripheral devices in a
limited physical area, such as a
building, office, laboratory, or
campus.

WAN
WANs connect computers and smaller
networks to larger networks over larger
geographic areas, which may span
different continents. They link the
computers through cables, optical
fibers, and satellites, but the users and
computers access the networks via
modem.
Wide Area Network
(WAN)
Advantages and Disadvantages of the Different
Computer Networks
Type of Network : Local Area Network (LAN)
Advantage :
 It is secure since it is a closed network and can’t be
accessed.
 LAN is faster due to the size of the network.
 It enables sharing of software programs, which will save
costs for the business.
Disadvantage :
 Data can be accessed if the server computer is not set up
correctly and there is a leak in security.
 They are limited in space and cannot extend to the wider
area.
 The condition of server computers may affect the network
as a whole.
Advantages and Disadvantages of the Different
Computer Networks
Type of Network : Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Advantage :
 MAN is less expensive than LAN.
 Compared to WAN, MAN is more secure.
 MAN is faster compared to WAN.
Disadvantage :
 There are higher chances that MAN will be attacked by
hackers, compared to LAN.
 MAN is slower compared to LAN, so it requires optic cables.
 MAN is more expensive compared to LAN.
Advantages and Disadvantages of the Different
Computer Networks
Type of Network : Wide Area Network (WAN)
Advantage :
 It covers a large geographical area, so the business can
connect office branches through WAN.
 There are lesser expenses for the business because there is
no need to spend on storage for branch businesses.
 Due to the global nature of WAN, businesses are also
encouraged to expand globally.
Disadvantage :
 WAN needs more security compared to MAN and LAN.
 The setup cost for WAN is high.
 As WAN covers a lot of areas, fixing the problem is also
difficult.
 Problems on connectivity or slow Internet speed issues.
Internet
The internet is a global network
that links smaller networks and
computers by using the Internet protocol
suite (TCP/IP) as a means to connect
them
Basic Internet Concepts
 Browser – this is the application software that lets you
access the World Wide Web
 Hypertext and hypermedia – Hypertext is the text
containing electronic links to other text while
hypermedia are links that contain pictures, videos, etc.
 HTML (Hypertext Mark up Language) – set of
commands used to create world wide web documents.
 Clients – computers that are capable of obtaining
information and applications from a server.
 Servers – computers that provide functionality to
other computers.
 IP Address – this is the numerical designation for each
computer or device connected to the internet.
The Positive Effects of the Internet to
the Business
 It enables the business to communicate easier and faster with its
employees, customers, and associates. Email and instant
messaging have changed the way the business communicates.
 Because of the internet, many businesses are now offering the
option to their employees to work from home using the office
equipment provided by the business.
 The internet allows the business to market and advertise its
products to a larger market. Moreover, the Internet allows the
business to be able to know the needs of its customers.
 Internet has allowed the business lower its costs on advertising
and still reach the intended customers.
 Collaborating with other businesses have become easier through
the use of internet
