Editor's Notes
Smartphone adoption has become very high among all age groups, just because someone knows how to use a smartphone doesn’t mean they know how to use a computer. Don’t presume that teens are familiar with using the computer in the ways you need to be to take a test online or fill out a form. Don’t assume because someone knows how to play videos on YouTube or go on Facebook that they can navigate an online test/online form More recently, we have seen customers who know how to use a touchscreen on a tablet but not how to use a computer. Touchscreens are more intuitive and easy to use and it can be difficult for customers who are unfamiliar with computers to wrap their mind around using a mouse. Taking a test is hard enough, if you add unfamiliarity with computers to it, that will make the whole testing experience even more difficult and puts up even more barriers. If you’re able to offer computer classes, offer computer classes or at least time for practice. Every library system offers computer classes, every library system offers computer time or WiFi for personal devices. Many people who are unfamiliar with computers have safety and privacy concerns about doing anything online. While we don’t know the security of the new GED or McGraw Hill test, we can assume they will be using industry standard safety & privacy procedures.
Typing is not taught in schools anymore, it hasn’t been for several years. Being an expert texter does not mean someone is good at typing on a keyboard. It’s also important to understand how text boxes work…you have to click in them to type in them, some limit how many characters you can type in, you can resize text boxes so you can see everything you’re typing
