National Overview
6

In 2018, there was a total of 292.4 million tons of municipal solid waste. Of that

What Do I Need?
7
Just as baking banana bread or brownies takes a good recipe for delicious banana
bread or fudgy brownies, good compost requires 3 essential ingredients: water,
browns, and greens.
Some examples of browns include dead leaves, branches and twigs. Greens refer to
items such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, coffee grounds.
Recipe for Perfect Compost
Ingredients
● Equal quantity of browns and greens
● Adequate water
1. Alternate layers of organic materials of green and brown by the size of the items
2. Water your compost daily to maintain moisture depending on location. If
exposed to significant sunlight, water more frequently.
Why Do I Need These?
8
Greens provide nitrogen
Ex. Grass clippings, vegetable waste,
fruit scraps, coffee grounds
Browns provide carbon
Ex. Dead leaves, branches and twigs
Water provides moisture to
help break down organic
matter

How do I start?
Compost bins do not need to be expensive or extremely structured. A
simple recycled wooden palette or bottomless basket from wire is a great
start! In Arizona, you can get a recycled trash containers as compost bins for
only $5!
What next?
Add your food scraps and yard waste to your bin. Keep the bin close to the
kitchen for your convenience and near a water source to water it frequently.
Consider placing the bin in the shade, to reduce water evaporation.
When is it finished?
Finished compost no longer resembles the original materials in appearance or
odor. It should be dark brown or black in color and have a sweet smell.
