Topic and Structure:
Argumentative Essay – Choose one of two topics provided in these instructions to develop an argumentative essay. You must choose one of the topics listed, or your submission will not be graded.
Option #1: Does Technology Promote Loneliness?
Develop a thesis statement built upon whether or not technology promotes loneliness. You should focus on either one form of hardware or one type of software. For example, you could target cell phones or laptops. If you want to look more into software, you could narrow your discussions to one type of social media or one gaming app. These are just a handful of a vast array of options you could choose.
Develop at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this resource can assist you in developing the counterargument and refutation). This organization should yield four body paragraphs. Using argumentative topic sentences that include your opinion for each section can help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. The beginning of a sample topic sentence might be, “First, Facebook does not promote loneliness because….” Then, be sure to support that claim with a point or two of researched data, followed by mostly original material that helps to explain how your research supports your claims as well as provides new insights and perspectives. Conclude each paragraph with a sentence that synthesizes the paragraph’s main ideas.
Sample Thesis Statement: Social media, particularly Facebook, does not promote loneliness because (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add counterargument focus). *Note that a thorough thesis statement will include the counterargument in addition to your own arguments, but be sure to frame your counterargument as the opposition’s opinion so that readers do not think that you are changing your stance.

Write a referential essay of at least 1,000 words in which you compare and contrast two subjects.
Choose from the "Approved Topics" list on page two of this assignment or submit a custom topic for
Professor Shanafelt's approval. You must organize your essay by trait rather than subject. The overall
structure of your essay, its number of paragraphs, and the internal structure of each paragraph must
conform to the comparison and contrast essay template in this assignment. You may compare, contrast,
or compare and contrast your the subjects you have chosen.
B. How to Submit:
1. Submit PDF document via Blackboard assignment page.
2. No emailed papers will be accepted.
3. No other file types will be accepted.
C. Due Date:
8 March 2020 @ 11:55 pm
D. Length:
1. 1,000 words minimum (4-5 pages + Works Cited)
2. The “Works Cited” page, heading, and other paraphernalia are not included in word count.

Argumentative Essay – Choose one of two topics provided in these instructions to develop an argumentative essay. You must choose one of the topics listed, or your submission will not be graded.
Option #1: Does Technology Promote Loneliness?
Develop a thesis statement built upon whether or not technology promotes loneliness. You should focus on either one form of hardware or one type of software. For example, you could target cell phones or laptops. If you want to look more into software, you could narrow your discussions to one type of social media or one gaming app. These are just a handful of a vast array of options you could choose.
Develop at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this resource can assist you in developing the counterargument and refutation). This organization should yield four body paragraphs. Using argumentative topic sentences that include your opinion for each section can help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. The beginning of a sample topic sentence might be, “First, Facebook does not promote loneliness because….” Then, be sure to support that claim with a point or two of researched data, followed by mostly original material that helps to explain how your research supports your claims as well as provides new insights and perspectives. Cause-and-Effect Argument Essay
In preparation for Essay 3 and by completing your textbook readings, you will be equipped to respond by objectively compiling information from a variety of sources to compose an essay that understands and practices reading, writing, and rhetoric within the context of a biblical worldview; applies methods of sound reasoning; produces well-structured essays; integrates sources accurately and effectively; writes with clarity; recognizes standard usage in English grammar, word choice (diction), phraseology, and sentence structure; and applies knowledge of sentence structure to basic sentence editing and revision (Syllabus MLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F, G and Module/Week 8 LOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
In Module/Week 7, you will write a thesis statement and outline for the cause and effect argument essay that you will write in the next module/week.
Develop an outline for your cause and effect argument essay that includes a clear thesis statement and a plan of support. Be sure to include all parts identified in “Structuring a Cause and Effect Argument” on pages 475–476 in your Practical Argument textbook. In addition, include at least 4 quotations, 1 summary,and 1 paraphrases into your essay from at least 3 outside sources to support your thesis statement and provide opposing argument(s). Be sure to document your sources correctly according to your documentation style (APA, MLA, or Turabian). Your outside sources can include scholarly sources and the Bible. (Note: Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable source for academic writing.)
Cause and Effect Essay Prompt
Write a cause and effect argument in which you answer one of the following questions:
1. How far should the government go to reduce the likelihood of terrorism on American soil?
2. Should illegal immigrants in the Unites States have constitutional rights?
3. Do immigrants have a duty to assimilate themselves into local culture?
Use academic research to include at least 4 quotations, 1 summary, and 1 paraphrase (at least 6 total) from at least 3 sources. Be sure to document your sources correctly according to your documentation style (current APA, MLA, or Turabian). The Bible can count as one of your sources.

The Assignment: Write a six-to-ten page argument paper that addresses a current issue that will address our theme of the impact of technology on communication on ourselves, on our world and on what it means to be human (Barrios, 583). The topic and the issue for this paper is the same as your exploratory paper assignment. The purpose of this paper is to present your position on the issue and then argue why by presenting your own reasons and evidence to support your thesis statement.
Locating Sources for Research. The purpose of the exploratory paper was to explore different writers and their position, their perspective, and the types of evidence they used in order to form your own position and perspective. You have three sources that you may use in your paper. For this paper, you must include a variety of sources; they cannot all come from Web sites. Search SMC’s library online catalog, search for a book, search online databases, find newspaper articles, use the search engine Google scholar at www.google.com, or www.yahoo.com . In addition, observations or experience from your personal life are not allowable. Refer to the following handouts: “Research Guide for Papers,” “Sources Acceptable for Academic Papers.” Both of these handouts are on eCompanion. If you include an article from a Website, there must be a date and a sponsor/publisher. If this is not available you cannot use this source.
Thesis Statement and Claim: Does your thesis clearly include a claim? Is it arguable? Does it take a perspective on an issue? Is it narrow and specific enough for the length of this assignment? Is it focused on one subject? Is it a claim of policy where you argue that certainpolicies should be changed? Is it a claim of value where you argue that some action, belief, or policy is morally wrong, good, or bad? Once your claim is clear, you must develop reasons that match and correspond to the type of claim being made.
Audience/Point of View: An effective argument is tailored to its audience. The reasons and the types of evidence you offer, the needs and values to which you appeal, terms defined, all depend on your audience and the type of claim. Ask: What does your audience know or not know about your topic? The audience is your instructor and classmates. Never assume that the audience is familiar with your topic or terms. You may need to include definitions and relevant details to help the audience understand your position in the first body paragraph. For this argument essay, you will use only the third-person point of view. No, “I” “We” or “You.”
Content/Body Paragraphs. For the length of this assignment, you should have at least three-to-four distinct and relevant reasons to support your thesis. Follow the guidelines for writing the argument paper when developing your reasons. Use the “because” clause approach.

Part I: Topics Inventory
For the Topics Inventory, you will construct a list of topics from which you may choose one to develop into a Research Paper for this course. This exercise is based on the models on p. 318 of

The paper will focus on a document of social and ethical significance. The main goal of the paper is to
analyze the logical reasoning found in your chosen document, drawing on outside research and on logical
concepts and skills from the course.
Length: 3000-3500 words

Sources: Your document, the course text by Lewis Vaughn, the course handouts, and at least 3 outside

Choosing a document:
- Choose a document of social and ethical significance as the focus of your paper. This can be
from any academic major or sphere of life (politics, business, sports, religion, etc.).
- Look for a document that is about 10-15 pages long. If you find something longer, you can use a
section from it (e.g., a chapter from a longer book). If you find something shorter, you can use

Attempt to secure what I refer to as a “tasty nugget” of information about the business. This is a more obscure or “fresh” fact about the company that will impress your reader/audience.
Developing this skill set will serve you well as you advance on your career in business.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

Tips
4. To brainstorm, you might consider using a Venn diagram or a
simple list to show what your topics have in common and how
they differ. Then you can select the most prominent or
interesting characteristics that you want to highlight in your
paper.
Be sure to
avoid beginning your comparisons or contrasts in the
introduction
. Your thesis is the only place in the introduction where you
will include this information. Use the introduction to get your
reader’s attention, and consider using a good strategy that leads
into the topic. For instance, you might relate a short anecdote to
illustrate your topic, an interesting quotation that relates to your
topic, or perhaps a surprising statistic that reveals something
about your topic.
Then, in the body paragraphs remember to
support your claim(s) outlined in the thesis
. For instance, if one of your points says the city and the
country are different in terms of transportation, be sure the
topic sentence
of one body paragraph presents a similar statement. In addition,
spend equal time on each subtopic in each body paragraph, and
one way to develop organized body paragraphs is to focus on
one topic before moving to the next one so that the paragraph
support is split 50/50. In other words, using the example above,
you would explain the transportation options in the city in full,
and then, you would detail the types of contrasting
transportation in the country. End each body paragraph with a
strong
concluding sentence
that synthesizes that paragraph’s discussions.
The

should sum up the specific supporting points as well as your
overall assessment of why these points are important. Consider
what kinds of interesting or new conclusions you can draw from
your comparison. In other words, your essay must reveal why
your comparison is important. A well-developed paragraph
often contains a minimum of five sentences. Note that any of
the main sections below labeled with Roman Numerals (I, II,
III, IV) could be more than just a single paragraph.
