Avril Elizabeth Home : People with Disabilities
More about Avril Elizabeth Home :
http://www.avril.org.za/contactus.html
History - early beginnings
In 1968 Sheila Suttner, a social worker at the Selwyn Segal Centre, a home for the intellectually
disabled people of the Jewish faith, was regularly receiving desperate pleas from parents to admit
their children to the Centre.
But the hostel was limited to members of the Jewish faith only, although the day-care facilities were
open to all. Sheila was so moved by the obvious plight of these families that, with the assistance of a
hard-working committee, she set about establishing a pilot scheme which allowed five or six
children to live in a home environment and attend day-care at the Selwyn Segal Centre
10. It was early in 1970 that the Avril Elizabeth Home was officially opened in Pandora Road, Kensington,
even though a few children had been admitted the previous year. From these small beginnings, the
Home has grown to a large, well-equipped centre in Fishers Hill, Germiston, caring for some 158
residents of all ages and races. Many of the pioneer residents are now veterans of the Home, which has
become the focal point of their lives.
The Avril Elizabeth Home is no institution: it is a warm and welcoming home for its residents. Another
feature that has developed over the years is an active, modern stimulation programme, every aspect of
which is tailored to suit the many different needs of the residents. In this way, each resident is lovingly
nurtured to expose his or her full potential.
11. With the increasing amount of applications received for residential care, the need for a larger property
became vital. It was then that someone heard about a convent for sale in Fisher’s Hill, Germiston, which
proved to be ideal. A massive fundraising drive got underway to raise the R1 million needed for the new
Home and the convent was transformed into a suitable safe haven for the residents. The move took
place in November 1981.

(CLOTHES DONATION)
INTRODUCTION TO LAMBANO SANCTUARY
We support the belief that any good we secure for ourselves is uncertain until it is secured for us all.
With this in mind we have the pleasure of introducing you to Lambano Sanctuary. Lambano Sanctuary is
about providing holistic residential care to children who have suffered deprivation, abandonment and are
orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. We are also about providing multi-level intervention through
palliative care or treatment to children with life threatening and life limiting illnesses. This sums up our two
main programmes being the 4 Homes and the 18-bed paediatric Sub-Acute / Hospice Facility.
Our impact indicators reflect that our programmes are working. Though all our Homes children are infected
with HIV, they are thriving and functioning optimally within the parameters of their potential. The lives of the
critically ill children at the paediatric facility are prolonged in a comfortable and pain free manner, due to the
support of our partners who enable us to continue with the high level individualised care and treatment.
We are sure you will agree with our tagline that the bottom line of Lambano Sanctuary is Giving Hope &
Care to Children. It is in this context that we seek a meaningful partnership with your entity.

different speakers (Christianity point of view, financial management, behaviour patterns, and also give them
hope that single parenthood is a temporary ministry where God prune us until we get married or achieve our
dreams/goals / our purpose in life ).......so there will be teachers of the word, psychologist, relationship expert,
fashion stylist and financial advisors to support them in their journey. Probably some can meet their future
wife/husband during the networking session. We are trying to build families since south africa has lots of single
