Series rings as the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees in 1977 and 1978, and was voted
the World Series MVP in 1978. Dent is most famous for his three-run home run in a tie-breaker
game against the Boston Red Sox at the end of the 1978 season. Although his hard work and
talent was “out of the park”, there was one thing that kept him motivated; his wife Marianne.
Marianne was his number one fan through most of his baseball career and inspired him each and
every day, but little did he know that soon it would be his turn to be her number one fan.
Marianne was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer in March, 2014. Marianne was a very strong
woman and could handle anything, but even the strongest person could not handle the physical
effects of what she would soon go through. With Bucky by her side, she managed to fight
courageously for 19 months. Throughout her battle, there was one simple thing that stuck out to
her. One day, prior to her first chemotherapy treatment, a blanket was given to her by a relative.
Little did she know, this blanket would travel with her and Bucky throughout the entire journey.
Although Marianne was going through a lot, she had a vision that even cancer couldn’t slow
down. Marianne envisioned and created "Embraced with Love", an initiative to provide cancer
patients with blankets to help them feel more comfortable during their chemotherapy treatments.
Marianne wanted each patient to feel as if they were wrapped in love, comfort and support as
they navigated through their own personal journey with cancer. Even after Marianne’s passing,
Bucky knew he had to keep her vision a reality. Through his charity, Legends on the Links, a
501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, he managed to give out over 600 blankets in adult and pediatric
treatment centers (Florida, New York, Utah, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania). In addition,
"Embraced with Love" has since broadened its scope to provide much needed financial support
to caregivers and families affected by long-term illness and/or physical/mental disability. This
week, Bucky Dent will visit the Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger
Wyoming Valley Medical Center, to keep Marianne’s dream a reality. The RailRiders staff will
be working alongside Bucky raising money during the Legends Series (player photo sales and an
online auction featuring legend’s signed items) that will benefit Embraced with Love. Dent
explains, "We are most grateful that the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders are giving us the
opportunity to continue to carry on Marianne's vision to make a difference in the lives of others
with our visit to the Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley
Medical Center. After witnessing firsthand the courage, strength and grace required by each
patient and their family members, it is such a blessing and honor to be able to be a small part of
their journey. We hope that the blanket will be a reminder for each patient that we care and will
keep them close in our thoughts and prayers." Although Bucky was known for his astonishing
on-field performances as a baseball player and manager, he will push each and every day to
make sure the vision of his number 1 fan lives on forever.

Description:
One of the RailRiders’ many missions is to inspire the community by participating in charity
events. The RailRiders’ team not only consists of the current players and staff but also past
players who want to help the RailRiders make a difference in the lives of others. The Legends
series is very near and dear to the former Yankee and world series MVP, Bucky Dent. Bucky
created Embraced with Love after losing his beloved wife to cancer in 2010. The mission is to
provide cancer patients with blankets to help them feel more comfortable during their
chemotherapy treatments. The RailRiders teamed up with Bucky to make his vision come to life.
The morning of June 4th
, Bucky and the RailRiders representatives attended the Frank M. and
Dorothea Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center to visit patients
and hand out the special Embraced with Love blankets. Not only did Bucky visit the treatment
center but the RailRiders mascot, Champ, made a guest appearance as well.

The smiles that were seen that morning made the preparation and the visit all worthwhile but the
day didn’t end there. Bucky returned to the field later that evening with two special guests; Chris
Chambliss and Roy White. These three Yankee legends were all on the 1978 World Series
championship team. Bucky Dent was the MVP of that game with a 3-run homerun over the
Boston Red Sox. Having these three great players together was something that Yankees and
RailRiders fans dream of. The Legends’ signed autographs before the game, raising a total of
$2,500 for Embraced with Love. They also started the game off by being recognized on the field
and each throwing out a first pitch. This day was memorable and inspiring to the RailRiders and
community as a whole.
