What We Talk About When We Talk About Unit TestingKevlin Henney

These days unit testing is considered sexy for programmers. Who'd have thought it? But there is a lot more to effective programmer testing than the fashionable donning of a unit-testing framework: writing Good Unit Tests (GUTs) involves (a lot) more than knowledge of assertion syntax.
Testing represents a form of communication and, as such, it offers multiple levels and forms of feedback, not just basic defect detection. Effective unit testing requires an understanding of what forms of feedback and communication are offered by tests, and what styles encourage or discourage such qualities.
What styles of test partitioning are common, and yet scale poorly, are uncohesive and are ineffective at properly expressing the behaviour of a class or component? What styles, tricks and tips can be used to make tests more specification-like and scalable to large codebases? How do we choose between scenario-based and property-based test cases?
The document summarizes three cases from the First-tier Tax Tribunal and Upper Tribunal:
1) The First-tier Tribunal upheld a £59,000 civil evasion penalty against a fish importer for failing to declare imports from Norway and avoiding £300,000 in customs duties. The Tribunal found the failure was deliberate and dishonest.
2) The First-tier Tribunal upheld a 60% civil evasion penalty against a taxpayer who claimed £34,000 in input VAT but provided no records to substantiate the claims during an HMRC inquiry.
3) The Upper Tribunal dismissed HMRC's appeal involving a Scottish farmer who purchased farm subsidy entitlement units. The Tribunal found the units were purchased for business purposes,

Esther Perel argues that through examining patterns of human connections, we can gain insight into cultural values regarding relationships. While relationships traditionally provided community, today one person is expected to fulfill roles once served by a village. At the same time, committed relationships are also expected to be romantic, emotionally fulfilling, and sexually exciting. This dual expectation places immense weight on relationships and helps explain why so many struggle or fail.
This document outlines four states of resilience: low competence and low commitment; low competence and high commitment; high competence and low/variable commitment; and high competence and high commitment. For each state, it provides guidance on setting goals and objectives, ensuring the process is understood, introducing resources as needed, pacing oneself, and conducting check-ins. The overarching message is that the approach should be tailored to the individual's level of competence and commitment.

The document discusses gravity anomalies and density variations in different regions based on gravity data. It shows how gravity maps reveal details about crustal thickness, tectonic features like faults and volcanic zones, and plate boundaries. Specific examples discussed include the Tibetan Plateau, Central America subduction zone, an area in Chugoku, Japan, and the state of Florida in the US. Regional gravity data can be used to model density changes associated with plate tectonics, crustal evolution, and volcanic and tectonic activity.
The USF team reviewed a geophysical investigation of the Kar Kar region conducted by WesternGeco in 2011. They found that WesternGeco's magnetotelluric (MT) data and models were of high quality. Both the WesternGeco and USF MT models identified a low resistivity zone at 300m depth that correlates with a water-bearing zone found in Borehole 4. USF performed gravity modeling which identified a north-south trending basin reaching 1500m depth, consistent with mapped faults. A preliminary hydrothermal model suggested observed temperatures could result from deep circulation of meteoric waters in the basin without needing a localized heat source. Additional geophysical data is recommended around the Jermaghbyur hot springs to
This document summarizes a study that used gravity data to delineate underground structure in the Beppu geothermal field in Japan. Analysis of Bouguer anomaly maps revealed high anomalies in the southern and northern parts of the study area that correspond to known geological formations. Edge detection filtering of the gravity data helped identify subsurface faults, including the northern edge of the high southern anomaly corresponding to the Asamigawa Fault. Depth modeling of the gravity basement showed differences between the southern and northern hot spring areas, with steep basement slopes along faults in the south and uplifted basement in the north.
This document summarizes the development of a new ultra-high resolution model of Earth's gravity field called GGMplus. Key points:
- GGMplus combines satellite gravity data from GOCE and GRACE with terrestrial gravity data and topography to achieve unprecedented 200m spatial resolution globally.
- It provides gridded estimates of gravity, horizontal and radial field components, and quasi-geoid heights at over 3 billion points covering 80% of the Earth's land.
- GGMplus reveals new details of small-scale gravity variations and identifies locations of minimum and maximum gravity, suggesting peak-to-peak variations are 40% larger than previous estimates. The model will benefit scientific and engineering applications.
Gravity measurements were taken in a region of China covering the south-north earthquake belt in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2005. Researchers noticed significant gravity changes in the region surrounding Wenchuan and suggested in 2006 that a major earthquake could occur there in 2007 or 2008. While gravity changes were significant at some locations, more research is needed to determine if they could be considered a precursor. Uncertainties exist from measurement errors, hydrologic effects, and crustal movements. Improved data collection and analysis could enhance using gravity monitoring for earthquake research.
The document provides guidelines for implementing the H/V spectral ratio technique using ambient vibration measurements to evaluate site effects. It recommends procedures for experimental design, data processing, and interpretation. The key recommendations include measuring for sufficient duration depending on expected frequency, using multiple measurement points, avoiding disturbances, and interpreting H/V peaks in context with geological and geophysical data. Reliable H/V peaks are defined as having a clear maximum within expected frequency ranges and uncertainties. The guidelines aim to help apply the technique while accounting for its limitations.

konferans ya da basın açıklaması yaparak. İkincisi;
yazılı olarak gerçekleştirebilirsiniz, örneğin makale
şeklinde. Üçüncüsü ise; yayınlama aracı (medya,
internet vb.) ile bilimsel çalışmalarınızı
paylaşabilirsiniz. Bilimsel iletişim ister elektronik
ortamda olsun ister basılı ortamda olsun, bu
iletişimin öncelikle ilgili konuda uzman olan kişiler
tarafından yapılması ve değerlendirme sürecinden
geçmesi gerekmektedir. Özellikle de, doğal afetler
gibi kriz durumlarında halkı bilgilendirme
hususunda bilim referanslı iletişim önem arz
etmektedir.
YÖNTEM
Kriz durumlarında iletişimin nasıl yapılacağına dair
denenmiş taktikler vardır. Bu taktikler Lucy Jones
tarafından ortaya konulmaktadır.
Bilim Referanslı İletişim Neden Gerekli?
Doğal afetler sonucu ortaya çıkan kriz
durumlarında, halkı bilgilendirmek için bilim
referanslı iletişime ihtiyaç duyulur. Bu nedenle,
özellikle kriz durumlarında aşağıda belirtilmiş
olayları gerçekleştirmek için, bilim referanslı
iletişime başvurulur:
• Davranışlarını değiştirmesi konusunda
insanları cesaretlendirmek için. Kriz
durumlarında insanları soğukkanlı
davranışlara itmek gerekir.
• Konuyla ilgili bilimsel bilgi aktarmak için.
İnsanların bilim konusunda eğitilmesi
gerekir.
• Konuyla ilgili ne / nelerin yapıldığını
ve/veya yapılması gerektiğini göstermek
için. Halka konuyla ilgili olarak ne /nelerin
yapıldığını ya da yapılması gerektiğini
göstermek gerekir ve kişilerin bunları
dikkate alması gerektiği vurgulanır.
• Konuyla ilgili hikâyenin anlatılması için.
Başarılı bir öneri getirebilmek için, hikâye
anlatımını kullanmak iyi bir yoldur.
• Depremler gibi, önemli bir durum
karşısında insanları doğru şekilde
bilinçlendirmek için. Kriz durumlarında
halk, uzman kişilerden doğru bilgi almak
istiyor ve gerçekleri öğrenmek istiyor;
çünkü bu durumlarda kişilerin oldukça
ÖZET
Doğal afetler sonucu ortaya çıkan kriz
durumlarında, halkı bilgilendirmek için yapılan
bilim referanslı iletişim oldukça önemlidir. Bu
nedenle bilimsel iletişimin, alanında uzman
kişiler tarafından yapılması önem arz
etmektedir. Dikkat edilmesi gereken nokta; iyi
bir bilimsel iletişim, gerçekçi ve inandırıcı payı
yüksek olandır. İnandırıcı bilimsel iletişimin de,
tutarlı mesajlar ve çeşitli kaynaklardan
doğrulanmış bilgiler içermesi gerekmektedir. Bu
nedenle bilimsel iletişimin gerçekçiliğinin ve
inandırıcılığının arttırılmasında, halka bilgi
veren konuşmacının bazı unsurlara dikkat
etmesi gerekir. Bu çalışmada, bilim referanslı
iletişimi daha iyi gerçekleştirme konusunda Dr.
Lucy Jones (doğal afetler konusunda özellikle
deprem hakkında toplumu bilgilendiren)
tarafından ifade edilen önemli unsurlar ve
taktikler ortaya konulmaktadır.

2. önemli psikolojik talepleri ortaya
çıkmaktadır.
Bilim Referanslı İletişimin Amaçları
Bilim referanslı iletişimin amaçları şunlardır:
• Halkın riski algılamasını ve düşünmesini
sağlamak.
• Kriz durumlarında halkın, konuyla ilgili
uzman kişinin rolünü anlamasını
sağlamak.
• Medyayı neyin ve/veya hangi kişinin
yönettiğini daha iyi anlamak. Medyanın
gündeminde hangi konunun ve/veya hangi
kişinin olduğunu daha iyi anlamak.
• Daha iyi ve daha gerçekçi mesajlar
vermek.
Bilim Referanslı İletişim Nasıl Olmalı ve Nasıl
Yapılmalı?
Bilimsel iletişim yapılırken dikkat edilmesi gereken
unsurlar vardır. Lucy’ ye göre bilim referanslı
iletişim şu şekilde yapılmalıdır; yani bilimsel
iletişimde dikkat edilmesi gereken unsurlar
şunlardır:
• Olumsuz davranışlardan kaçınılmalıdır.
Olumsuz davranışlar yerine, yapıcı tepkiler
teşvik edilmelidir.
• Halkın risk algısını azaltacak şekilde
demeçler verilmelidir. İsteksiz yapılan
konuşma, korku içeren söylemler, bilimin
cevap veremediği konular, ya da bilimin
çekiştiği yerler, potansiyel felaket
söylemleri ve ölümcül ifadeler kişilerin
risk algısını yükseltir. Bu nedenle de,
konuşmacının demeç verirken bu konulara
dikkat etmesi gerekmektedir.
• Konuşmanın, dinleyicilerin bilgili karar
vermelerini sağlayacak şekilde yapılması
gerekir. Bunun için de; kullanılan bilimsel
tekniklerden yararlanılabilir. Örneğin;
deprem konusunda “risk bölge haritası”
kullanılabilir. Ancak; burada şunun da
unutulmaması gerekir: toplumun büyük bir
kesimi harita okumasını bilmez.
Unutmayın, tüm dinleyiciler mühendis ya
da uzman kişiler değil.
• Mümkün olduğunda, olasılık değil; frekans
kullanın. Özellikle, yüksek riskli
durumlarda frekans (sıklık) kullanımı daha
iyi bir yöntemdir.
• Unutulmaması gereken bir diğer nokta da;
dinleyiciler, kötü sonuçlardan kolaylıkla
etkilenir.
• Verilerin ve/veya bilgilerin nereden temin
edildiği belirtilmelidir. Kaynak
gösterilmelidir. Örneğin veriler üniversiten
mi yoksa afet yönetim merkezinde mi
alındı?
• Tüm medyadaki haber yayın yorumları
analiz edilmelidir.
• Belirsizlik karışıklığı arttırır. Ayrıca
belirsizlik, korkunun oluşmasında da temel
teşkil eder. Bu nedenle de, mümkün
olduğunca demeçlerde belirsizliklere yer
verilmemelidir.
• Korkuyu azaltmak için güven verici
bilgiler telkin edilmelidir. Örneğin; acil
durumlarda nereye ya da kimlere
başvurulacağının bilgisi ve/veya telefonu
verilmelidir.
• Verilen bilginin ne anlama geldiği,
dinleyiciler tarafından net şekilde
anlaşılmalıdır. Bu nedenle de bilimsel
iletişim de netlik ve gerçekçilik çok
önemlidir.
• Demeçlerde korunma, kurtarma ve yardım
faaliyetlerine yer verilmelidir.
• Bilimsel iletişimde en iyi mesaj
verilmelidir. En iyi mesajı verebilmek için
konuşmacının, şu üç aşamayı
gerçekleştirmesi gerekir: Birinci aşama
olayı içselleştirmek; ikinci aşama ne
olduğunu anlama, tanımlamak ve
yorumlamak; üçüncü aşama ise kendini
korumak için eylemler planlamak.
• Bilimsel iletişimin medyada reyting
yapabilmesi için, konuşmacının şeffaf ve
akıcı olması gerekir. Unutmayın, insanlar
anlayabildiği kişileri dinlemek ister.
SONUÇLAR
Doğal afetler gibi kriz durumlarında, bilim
referanslı iletişim yapacak uzman kişilere şu
taktikleri yapmaları tavsiye edilmektedir:
1. Taktik: Tutarlı Mesaj Verilmeli. Bunun
için de; Birçok kaynaktan aynı bilgilerin,
mesajların gelmesi gerek; ancak bu
durumda inandırıcı oluyor, aksi halde
inandırıcılığını kaybediyor.
2. Taktik: Görsel takviyelerden
yararlanılmalı. İyimser görseller
kullanılmalı.
3. Taktik: Halk uygulamaya yönlendirilmeli.
Örneğin; insanlara mutlaka deprem
tatbikatı yapmaları söylenmeli.
3. 4. Taktik: Risk değil de, sonuçlarla
bütünleşilmeli; yani riske değil de
sonuçlara odaklanılmalı.
Bu taktikler çerçevesinde bilimsel iletişiminize;
kendi kelimelerinizle bir iki cümle şeklinde işinizi
açıklamakla başlarsınız. Sonra; çalıştığınız
kurumun önemine dikkat çekersiniz. Daha sonra;
biliminizi destekleyici araçlara (gerek görsel
gerekse veri şeklinde) başvurursunuz ve son olarak
da halka mesajınızı iletirsiniz.
Tüm bunlara paralel olarak bilimsel iletişimin; soru
gelecekmiş şekilde hazırlanmasında yarar vardır.
Ayrıca; konuşmacının da konuşma notları
hazırlaması, metinden okumaması ve konuşmasını
ezber şeklinde yapmaması gerekir.
