History of Commonwealth Games.•Reverend Ashley Cooper was the first to propose the idea of having this contest. • In 1928, a key Canadian athlete, Bobby Robinson, was given the task of organizing the first ever Commonwealth Games. • These Games were held in 1930,in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and saw the participation of 400 athletes from eleven countries.

Other Preparation. • Inpreparation for an influx of English- speaking tourists for the Games, the Delhi government was implemented a program to teach English, and necessary skills for serving tourists, to key workers- such as cab drivers, security workers, waiters and service staff etc. • In the two years prior to the Games 2,000 drivers were taught English. • New roads were made and more facilities were increase.

Venue. • Event tookplace at 12 competition venues. • A total of 20 training venues were used in the Games. • Of these 20, one was used for archery; three for aquatics; two lawn bowls; two netball; eight for rugby sevens, including venues within Delhi University; two for shooting; one for squash; two for table tennis; one for weightlifting; three for wrestling and two for tennis.

Opening ceremony. • Theopening ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, main stadium of the event, in New Delhi, India. • It began at 7:00 PM on 3 Oct 2010 ending at 11:00 PM (IST) displaying India’s varied culture in a plethora of cultural showcase. • It was watched live by a global audience of around three billion.
