- 2. About Commonwealth Games. • It is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from Commonwealth of nation. • It is often known as ‘Friendly Games’. • The Games was overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CFG). • Mike fennel is the current head of this federation.
- 3. • AIM: The aim behind to organise the sporting event was to increase better understanding and goodwill of the British Empire. • Value: The core value of the Commonwealth games are Humanity, Equality and Destiny. • After Olympic, Commonwealth Games is second largest sports festival in the world.

History of Commonwealth Games.• Reverend Ashley Cooper was the first to propose the idea of having this contest. • In 1928, a key Canadian athlete, Bobby Robinson, was given the task of organizing the first ever Commonwealth Games. • These Games were held in 1930,in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and saw the participation of 400 athletes from eleven countries.

- 13. • Initially the budget was estimated be Indian Olympic in 2003 for hosting the Games was Rs.1,620crore (US$358.20 million). • Total budget estimation in 2010 became Rs.11,500crore (US$2.54 billion). • Business Today magazine estimated that the Games cost Rs.60,000crore (US$13.26 billion). • The 2010 Commonwealth Games are the Costs.

Other Preparation. • In preparation for an influx of English- speaking tourists for the Games, the Delhi government was implemented a program to teach English, and necessary skills for serving tourists, to key workers- such as cab drivers, security workers, waiters and service staff etc. • In the two years prior to the Games 2,000 drivers were taught English. • New roads were made and more facilities were increase.

Concerns and controversies. • Several concerns were raised over the preparation of the Games and these include excessive budget overruns. • Infrastructural compromise. • Poor living condition in Commonwealth Games Village. • Delay in construction of main Games’ venues. • The withdrawal of prominent athletes. • Widespread corruption by officials of the Games’ Organising Committee.

Participating nations. • There were 71 participating nations at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. • As Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth, it was banned from participating in the Games. • Rwanda fielded a team for the games for the first time after becoming a Commonwealth member in 2009. • Tokelau was initially expected to compete, but did not do so.

Venue. • Event took place at 12 competition venues. • A total of 20 training venues were used in the Games. • Of these 20, one was used for archery; three for aquatics; two lawn bowls; two netball; eight for rugby sevens, including venues within Delhi University; two for shooting; one for squash; two for table tennis; one for weightlifting; three for wrestling and two for tennis.

Opening ceremony. • The opening ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, main stadium of the event, in New Delhi, India. • It began at 7:00 PM on 3 Oct 2010 ending at 11:00 PM (IST) displaying India’s varied culture in a plethora of cultural showcase. • It was watched live by a global audience of around three billion.

Closing Ceremony. • The game closed on 14 October 2010 in a colourful closing ceremony featuring both Indian and Scottish performers held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. • It marks the end of game of the Games with a huge celebration with singers from all over India providing a musical retreat which had the whole stadium dancing. • The Commonwealth Games flag was handed over to representatives of Glasgow, Scotland which will host the XX Commonwealth Games in 2014.
