Bill Crowe is a marketing teacher at St. Lawrence College with a degree in business administration and marketing. He believes developing writing skills and understanding marketing and entrepreneurship have helped him succeed. On an average day, he wakes up early to work from home, meeting with students and marking exams in between teaching classes. His advice for those unsure of their career path is to be patient, stay in school, read books on career exploration, and know that finding your way takes time. Business communication is important because business is about people, and communicating effectively helps build relationships and understand customers. I chose to conduct my interview on Bill Crowe. Bill is someone who I admire and drives me to do well in
life. He has many positive messages that really make me think. I still am unsure of what I want to do
with my career, but I know that Bill always has some good inspiration.
1. What personal skills do you believe have gotten you where you are today?
Developing my writing skills, understanding more about marketing and entrepreneurship. That’s taken
years of figuring that out, imagine how bad I was fifteen years ago.
2. Can you describe an average day in your work life?
Why don’t I do today, this isn’t an average day. I got up at 3:15am, went downstairs and made some
coffee. I was in my office by 3:30am. This is goodand bad for you to hear this. Then I crafted up a nice
little email, or memo for a president of a company we deal with, because she asked me. I then wrote a
market message for a doctor, that’s she wanted me to do to send out to her clients. I then cleaned up
some emails. Then I had a shower about 7:15am. Came to the college around quarter to eight, well I
stopped for breakfast somewhere in there, because I knew I needed the energy from being up so early.
Had a class at 8:30am, gave an exam. Met with some students, and going mark some exams. Then
around 8pm I will head home. I know where I need to be every half-hour.
3. For someone who doesn’t know what they want to do for their career, what advice to you
have?
Be patient, stay in school as long as you can. Read the book called what colours your parachute. Don’t
believe everything in the media, you will find your way. There is a lot of pressure about, oh you need to
know what you want to do, I don’t necessarily believe that is true. You have lots of time.
4. Why is Business Communications important?

2. Business is really about people, and people buy from people and people work with people. We are in
the people business and by the way we sell goods and services, and we sell education. If you are
involved with people you have to be able to think how he or she is thinking.
5. Howmany hours do you work in a typical work week?
70 hours, between the 2 jobs. It would be more, but I have surrounded myself with great people who
know how to do their job right.
6. If you knew then what you know now, what would you do differently?
I would spend more time developing my writing skills. Spend more time surrounding myself with
successful people and getting the wisdom from them, But more on my writing skills.
What I learned from Bill will continue with me for the rest of my career. I am glad I had this opportunity
to talk with a well-known business professional. He will always make me want to strive to the top. I will
take the advice he has given me and use it the best to my ability. I believe that having bill as a role
model is one of the best things I could do for my future career.
