Increasing numbers of parents do not have a standard nine-to-five job; they may work shifts, have zero-hour contracts, unforeseen overtime or other unpredictable hours. These atypical work patterns can present childcare challenges, if partners or relatives cannot provide informal childcare. Two of our reports examine the scale of these challenges and present solutions to help meet this specific childcare need.

Abstract

This webinar will reflect upon recent research into fact response, fact checking, and the journey of the political fact. This research, conducted during the 2017 UK General Election campaign, consisted of two interrelated studies: 1) an online survey of the general public (n = 538); and 2) a series of 23 electronically-assisted interviews with citizens in North-East Scotland. Both studies explored the tactics and heuristics used in evaluating the credibility of ‘facts’ presented online by Scottish political actors.

Using more than 3 years of data collected from Twitter and fact-checking organizations and a combination of spread variance analysis, impulse response modeling, and causal analysis, we will highlight the weak causal relationships between the spread of misinformation and fact-checks and discuss what topics are the less likely to be affected by fact-checks. We will also show how the proposed observatory can be used for tracking demographics, fact-checks, and topics over time.

There are too many claims, and many of them are not worth checking:
● Subjective statements (e.g. Scotland’s record on tackling poverty is not good
enough.)
● Moral arguments (e.g. It is wrong for the Tory party to support the renewal of
Trident submarines.)
● Claims about the future (e.g. We would be economically better off after
Scottish independence)

● Evidence-based statements (e.g. One in five Scots leave primary school

● Based on statistical data or alleged historical fact
● It is very unlikely for a politician (in this country) to make a statistical claim
without ANY evidence
● But the claim may not give a full picture of the evidence
● Selectively quoting experts and statistics to obscure or massage the truth
● By fact-checking the claim, we are trying to get the full story
