This document summarizes the key points from a Sunday school lesson on the supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ based on the book of Colossians. It discusses that believers should not be led astray by empty philosophies but should look to Christ alone. It emphasizes that in Christ dwells all the fullness of God and that believers are complete in Him, needing nothing else. The document rejects the idea of a "second blessing" experience, stating that believers receive the indwelling Holy Spirit at salvation.

Why didn’t Jesus explicitly state he was God the Son and what does this mean? Learn about the battle between exegetes and systematic theology. What is the difference between explicit and implicit Christologies? Learn why each of the Gospels center on the identity of Jesus and answers “Who is this man?” in its own way. See how the transcendent identity of Jesus is revealed primarily in the way he speaks and acts in his Father’s stead and in the way he relates to his Father.

This is a study of how Jesus is the greatest changer of hearts and lives in all of history. He makes people change and become what God wants His children to be.
In this talk we move past the grand opening of Hebrews into the guts of the argument; how Jesus is superior to the entire religious system of the law but not only that - how he has totally eclipsed the religious system of law and Moses with the 'system of the resurrection'. All of these grand themes are crystallised in the strange governing theme of 'Melchizedek'. We unpack all of that in this talk - and we also confront the scariest passage in the NT along the way! May this bless you and help transform your minds.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

“See to it that no one takes you captive by
philosophy and empty deceit, according to human
tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the
world, and not according to Christ”. (Col. 2:9)
“according to the elemental principals or spirits of the world” – This
second source Paul identifies for philosophy has been difficult for Bible
scholars to interpret. The problem lies in the ambiguity of the word
translated as ‘basic principles’ or ‘elementary principals’ (stoicheia)
.

“See to it that no one takes you captive by
philosophy and empty deceit, according to human
tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the
world, and not according to Christ”. (Col. 2:9)
“and not according to Christ” – The alternative to this superficially
attractive ‘philosophy’ is the life and truth is found in Christ. Don’t
surrender yourself to any of these attractive philosophies espoused by
smooth-talking theorists and not according to Jesus Christ.
Colossians

4. Week 25
The Bible is telling us Colossians 2:9:
• Don’t allow yourself to be held captive by the empty
deception that comes through philosophy.
• Don’t allow yourself to be led astray by the constant
changing traditions of men.
• Don’t be carried off by the earthly, childish or demonic
wisdom of this world (James 3:13-18).
• Don’t surrender yourself to any of these attractive
philosophies espoused by smooth-talking theorists and
not according to Jesus Christ.

understanding;
• He is the One through whom we are strengthened with
all might, according to his glorious power.
• He is the One who helps us to be patient and suffer long

• We are made partakers of the inheritance of the saints
in light and have been delivered from the power of
darkness to be placed in His kingdom.

6. Week 25
• In Him we have redemption through His blood, and the
forgiveness of sins.
• He is the image of the invisible God
• He is the One who outranks all the creation of God
• He created all things that are in heaven, and that are in
earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or
dominions, or principalities, or powers. All things were
created by Him, and for Him.

• He is the beginning, the One who’s resurrection from

whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
• He is the One who reconciled us to God, we who were at
one time alienated and enemies in our mind by wicked
works.
• He is the One who, because of His suffering and death,
will one day present the believer holy and unblameable
and unreproveable in His sight.

so burdened about the Corinthians.
He says in 11:3, “I’m afraid lest as the

The church has been led astray from
the simplicity and purity of devotion

12. Week 25
“Jesus did not only teach or expound his message. He
was identical with his message. ‘In Him,’ say the
Scriptures, ‘dwelt the fullness of the Godhead bodily.’
• He did not just proclaim the truth. He said, ‘I am the
truth.’
• He did not just show a way. He said, ‘I am the way.’
He did not just open up vistas. He said, ‘I am the
door.” ‘I am the Good Shepherd.’ ‘I am the
resurrection and the life.’ ‘I am the I AM.’
• In Him is not just an offer of life’s bread. He is the
bread.

• We don’t need Christ plus psychology.
• We don’t need Christ plus ritual.
• We don’t need Christ plus mysticism
• We don’t need Christ plus science.

14. Week 25
“For in Him the whole fullness of deity
dwells bodily…(Col. 2:9)
“This is one of the most blessed passages in all of Scripture. It
presents the glorious majesty of Christs Person and His complete
sufficiency. Verse 9 is perhaps the most definitive statement of
Christs deity in the epistles. It is the rock upon which all attempts to
disprove Christs deity are shattered. Obviously, these heretics were
saying Jesus was not God, and that was the most damning and
disturbing element of their satanology -- as it still is in any false
system”. (MacArthur)
Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency

15. Week 25
• “fulness” – is the Greek word plērōma
(same word used in Colossians 1:19). By the
use of this word, the Bible is teaching us
that “the sum total of all that God is, all His
being and attributes” reside in Christ. The
fullness of God dwells fully and permanently
in Christ.
• “dwells” – is katoikeō and means “to settle
down and be at home”. This word is in the
present tense and means that the essence of
Deity (or the divine nature) continually
abides at home in Christ. He is fully God
forever.
Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
16. Week 25
“And you are complete in Him…” (Col.
2:10a)
“complete” – is the Greek word, plēroō (play-ro'-o) and is a play on words from
verse 2:9.
The same root for the word “complete” occurs here (2:10) and in 1:9 (filled).
Although this is an obvious play on words with 1:19 (fullness) and 2:9 (fullness), it
is equally obvious that Paul did not mean the Colossian Christians were elevated
to the same stature as Jesus. Nor did he mean that any one Christian became
deity. Instead, Paul was picking up the generic use of the term to state that, just
as Jesus was fully God, believers are fully complete in Him.

17. Week 25
Question:
"Is there a second
blessing subsequent to
salvation?"
Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
18. Week 25
Answer: The term “second blessing” is
understood in two ways by Christians—
one with reference to the baptism of the
Holy Spirit, and one with reference to
sinless perfection.
The phrase “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”
is not found in the Bible. The Bible
speaks of a baptism with, by, or in the
Holy Spirit. It never refers to the baptism
of the Holy Spirit.

The Scriptures Teaching on Ministry of the Holy Spirit
1. Foretold by John the Baptizer – Matthew 3:11
2. Spoken of by Jesus – John 7:37; Acts 1:5
3. He came on Pentecost – Acts 2:4
4. Reflected upon by Peter – Acts 11:15-16
5. He indwells believers – John 14:17; Rom. 8:9; Eph.
1:13-14
6. He fills believers – John 14:16; Eph. 5:18
7. He places believers in the Body – 1 Corinthians 12:13
8. He’s given at moment of salvation – Eph. 1:13; Gal. 3:2
9. He indwells permanently - 2 Cor. 1:22; Eph. 4:30).
10. He can be grieved – Eph. 4:30
11. His activity within us can be quenched – I Thess. 5:19
12. He can be lied to – Acts 5:3, 4)
Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
20. Week 25
“And you are complete in
Him…” (Col. 2:10a)
There is no “second blessing”. Nothing we need to
“tarry” for. There is no need for someone to lay hands
on us. We don’t need to speak in tongues. There is no
“baptism of the Holy Spirit.”
Outside of a saving relationship with Jesus Christ,
man is spiritually, mentally and morally incomplete
because he is totally out of fellowship with God, he
lives outside of God’s will and he does not know
ultimate truth found in the Scriptures.
Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency

21. Week 25
1. At salvations, believers become “partakers of the divine
nature” (1 Peter 1:4) and are made complete.
2. Those who are “partakers of the divine nature” have,
through “His divine power” been “granted…everything
pertaining to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3).

teachings of any cult or false teacher.
