1) Students will perform an experiment using chromatography to separate mixtures of colored inks or dyes. They will observe how water carries different components of inks at different rates across a coffee filter or paper, separating the mixture into its individual colors. 2) In one experiment, students predict whether mixing blue and yellow food coloring will make green. They observe that the mixture is not exactly the same color as green food coloring. 3) In another experiment, students write black ink lines on a coffee filter and observe what happens when water touches the ink. After 15 minutes, they see the black ink has separated into multiple colors.
