This document describes a candy chromatography experiment to separate and identify the dyes in different colored candies. The goals are to use paper chromatography to see which dyes are used in candy coatings. The experiment involves dissolving candy in water to extract the dyes, applying the dye solutions to filter paper, and developing the paper in a salt water solution to separate the dye mixtures based on how strongly they bind to the paper. This allows observation of the different bands that form, identifying the individual dyes present in each candy color. The student found the experiment fun and insightful for learning about dyes, though the results could have been clearer with better filter paper.
