Captain John Smith implemented a policy in the Jamestown colony that required all healthy colonists, whether laborers or gentlemen, to gather the same amount of food as he did each day or face banishment from the colony. The sick were exempt from this requirement and were provided food. This became known as his "no work, no eat" policy. William Bradford served as governor of Plymouth Colony for over 30 years after the death of John Carver. He kept a journal of the Plymouth Colony from 1620 to 1647.
