Carol Massoud, a regional director at Colliers International in Montreal, summited Mount Kilimanjaro in February 2011. Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest point at over 19,000 feet above sea level and consists of three volcanic cones. Though the first recorded summit was in 1889, climbing Kilimanjaro is still a dangerous endeavor due to risks such as rockslides, hypothermia, and altitude sickness. Massoud battled freezing temperatures and strong winds during her 8.5 hour ascent to reach the summit.

At a breathtaking altitude of 19,340 feet
above sea level, Mt. Kilimanjaro stands
resolute as the world’s tallest freestanding
mountain and continental Africa’s highest
point of land. Kilimanjaro is a dormant but still
volcanic mountain, consisting of three distinct
volcanic cones that make up its peaks.

The summit of the tallest peak on the
mountain was first reached by German
geologist Hans Meyer in 1889, and since
then, many have tried. It is estimated that
more people have died attempting the trek
then have perished on Everest. Rockslides,
hypothermia and the negative effects of
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) combine to
make Kilimanjaro a dangerous adventure,
even for experienced climbers.

to the top of Kilimanjaro in February of 2011.
The ascent took just over 8.5 hours of
constant hiking, but Carol Massoud battled
freezing temperatures and strong winds to
reach the summit.
