These slides describe my efforts to change engineering education. By focusing on group projects and presentations and real-world engineering issues that are applicable to much of industry, we can help students develop and demonstrate real-world skills. Industry will notice well done analysis of real-world issues and this has occurred in my two classes. The next steps are to work more closely with industry, focus more engineering classes on group projects and presentations, and to create new forms of resumes and transcripts. These resumes and transcripts should promote the students through linked presentations that demonstrate the real-world capabilities of students and that help engineering departments build brand images.
Nurturing the Accumulation of Innovation: Lessons From The InternetNBER
The document discusses lessons that can be learned from the development of the internet and applied to major energy innovation efforts. It covers two eras: the pre-commercial era where DARPA and other groups explored new technologies, and the commercial era when the internet became widely adopted. Key lessons include managing dispersed innovation communities, creating new industries within competitive markets, allowing a variety of options to be explored, and having low barriers for new entrants.
- International university rankings provide composite measures of academic quality, research output, teaching quality, and international reputation based on metrics like peer review surveys, citation counts, faculty-student ratios, and percentages of international students and faculty.
- While rankings are not intended as strict league tables, they have significant real-world impacts by influencing government and university policies and priorities around the world as well as student choice.
- Rankings also create competition between institutions to improve their standing through strategies like increasing research productivity, attracting top faculty and students internationally, and enhancing teaching quality and graduate employability.
