WHAT IS ‘COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE’?

As the name suggests- a collection of knowledge from
    several sources/people.
The knowledge gained/obtained can be put on the
internet, e.g. on networking sites-doing this will make
them more likely to appear on a search engine
Collective intelligence could be more accurate and a
   more intelligent choice-explain why
HOW DO YOU ‘HARNESS’ COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE?

It’s simple. All you have to do is create a platform for
users, such as Youtube or Ebay.
The individual who is part of this can contribute with
their own information/materials or simply take what
they need. For example-Bit Torrent-you can share or
  just take videos.
STRENGTHS AND ADVANTAGES
A wider range of information is available as there are
   different sources

A wide range of sources also means a wider range in
   views

It’s free to upload your information
WEAKNESS AND DISADVANTAGES

As mentioned on the previous slide, collective
intelligence can be more accurate then other sources,
but in order for this concept to be successful, you
need several members rather than just a few.

The previous point may help to make the source is more
   accurate.
“Hyperlinking is the foundation of the web. As users add new content,
and new sites, it is bound into the structure of the web by other users
discovering the content and linking to it.”

(O’Reilly, T. 2005)
SOME FORMS OF COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE:
Websites and programmes such as Spotify and Last
FM are examples of collective intelligence.

Each one of us who logs on to a social site e.g.
twitter is contributing to the ever building pool of
knowledge.
“The central principle behind the success of the giants
  born in the
Web 1.0 era who have survived to lead the Web 2.0 era
  appears to
be this, that they have embraced the power of the web to
  harness
collective intelligence.” O’Reilly
Several websites use user activity to produce better
websites and suggestions.

This means that even without realising you are
contributing to collective intelligence… so next time a
suggested video on Youtube comes up, you know that
you’re contributing to collective intelligence…
WHY IS COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE IMPORTANT?
Firstly it is important because it helps to shape what we
see around us. E.g. social network sites such as
Facebook and Twitter.

Secondly, it helps when you are surfing the web, e.g. if
you’re the kind of person who likes animals then animal
adverts may appear.
OVERALL…
Collective intelligence is something that comes in
handy when searching for something e.g. when you
are on Twitter, hashtags are used, This helps to
separate and categorize information. So if you needed
to find something about an earthquake, you could just
type in ‘#earthquake’-you will get several results
which have a hashtag with the key word on to it.

You also get to have an input in the way that the
 cyber environment works around you.
