Poise can be described as, dignified, a self confident manner or bearing, composure, self possession. The words self
assurance, polish, grace, refinement, calmness and tact can also be used to describe poise.
Power can be summed up in two ways. " The ability or capacity to do something or act in a certain way " or The ability or
capacity to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events ".
The power in poise is the ability to direct or influence the behaviour of yourself. To behave with dignified grace, calmness
and self assurance. This is where the power lies.
As Kipling wrote
" If you can keep your head when all about you
are losing theirs and blaming it on you
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
but make allowences for their doubting too "
The ability to control yourself as opposed to letting others or outside events control you, this is power. To take a step
back and express in a calm detached manner, this is the power of poise.
Sometimes all it takes is five minutes of reflection to consider, instead of immediate action. On other occasions when
others believe they need an answer now, your ability to say " come back in 24 hours and we will talk ". You would be
amazed how 24 hours can put something into perspective. It is a rare skill, this thing called poise. It comes with practice.
Poise is power and those with poise don't allow themselves to be led as if they had a chain on them.
So today ask yourself this one question ;
Are you poised or led a merry dance by outside influences ? One is power, the other . . .

2. 5 I was reminded of this customer experience paradox, last week.
While having a coffee with an old friend another person entered the
coffee shop, waved and joined us. This person was a friend of my friend
and an acquaintance of mine. After another twenty minutes or so we all
left.
As I walked back to my car, I remembered why this person was only an
acquaintance of mine. Because of their negativity.

15 One of my favourite forms of poetry is Haiku. The ability to
express so much in seventeen syllables is a true skill.
Over the weekend while reading a book on Haiku, one of the old
master's Onitsura stated " Makoto is what the Haiku poet is searching
for ".
Makoto is a Japanese word meaning " truth, sincerity or the absence of
falsehood " and that yearning for Makoto is the way of human beings.
This I believe to be true.

9 Last week I enjoyed a couple of days off. One evening an early
light dinner was arranged with an old friend.
A couple of hours went by enjoying food, glass of wine, couple of
coffees and good conversation. As we said our good-byes and I had
started to walk home, it hit me. A big attack of hunger pangs. Beside me
was a national fast food outlet. " A portion of french fries should abate
the hunger " I thought.
I placed my order ; " sorry we have no french fries ".

2 " People rise to their level of incompetence " Laurence J Peter
That is the Peter Principle. When I came across it about seven years
ago, it explained a lot that use to baffle me.
When you dig a little deeper, you find people who were promoted
because they were good at their previous job. No thought was given as
to whether they had the skill sets required for their new position.
And very rapidly they rise to their level of incompetence. Which in turn
leads to a high level of staff churn.

25 Yesterday waiting in line to pay for a newspaper, a strange thing
occurred.
Two people ahead of me and this young guy comes running up to a floor
assistant, with two postcards in his hand. Asking could he pay her
instead of going to till.
She explained the items had to be scanned and asked him politely to
join the small queue.
He was two places behind me. Just as I was about to pay, he rushed
around, dropped the cards on the counter and ran out the door.

self "
Tao Te Ching
What is a phantom ? It is defined as " an appearance or illusion without
material substance. "
When we think only of ourselves, the phantoms of hope and fear come
out to play.
We start to hope for outcomes that benefit our self and nobody else. We

27 " Nobody talks about entrepreneurship as survival, but that's
exactly what it is and what nurtures creative thinking. Running that

Anita Roddick
Financial science is the study of taxation, internal auditing and financial
management. Dealing with assets and liabilities and their degrees of
uncertainty and risk. Finance is them the science of money

15 Mediocre with just an irrelevant touch of premium, not enough to
ruin the delicious essential mediocrity. " Venkat Rao
Reading the sports section on Sunday, I came across the term "

6 Over the past weekend, listening to a HBR Ideacast, I heard the
phrase " fight the competitor or date the customer". The podcast
was with David Robertson the author of The Power of Little Ideas.
I loved the phrase and have started reading the book. The phrase stuck
with me because over the years, I have seen people become so
obsessed with blowing the competition out of the water, they neglect
their customers.

22 Last Saturday just gone, I had to go into the city to buy some
items. I popped into one of the mini malls heading to one shop. On
my way there was one of those stand alone displays selling a tech item.
The sign peaked my interest, so I went up to investigate. As I looked
around the display, the sales person kept their head down scrolling
through their social media feed. After thirty seconds I carried on.
On my return, I stopped again and looked at the display and all the
items.

26 Roger Federer won Wimbledon 2017 after five years in the
wilderness since his last win in 2012. In his post match interview
he said " I kept dreaming, I kept believing and kept working.
The principle, all three need to work in tandem. Believing and dreaming
without work, leads to frustration. All work without a dream or belief
attached, becomes meaningless and dull, people soon give up.
All three combined makes the whole.

18 This story has become part of the folklore of Silicon Valley.
A number of years ago, Apple and Microsoft were bringing out new
operating systems. Apple engaged 600 engineers and over two years
they developed, debugged and deployed ios 10.
At the same time Microsoft engaged 10,000 engineers and over five
years they developed, debugged and launched the Vista operating
