Pierre Trudeau became Prime Minister of Canada in 1968 and sought to chart a less US-dependent foreign policy course for Canada. In 1970, he signaled this shift by officially recognizing the People's Republic of China, defying US pressure not to. However, Trudeau acknowledged that as Canada's neighbor, the US's actions still had influence and Canada could not completely ignore US considerations in its policies.
