This document compares regular Coke to Diet Coke and discusses the sugar and artificial sweetener content of each. It also provides advice on dealing with sugar cravings, interviews a self-described "soda addict", and examines the potential health effects of ingredients in Diet Coke like caramel coloring and aspartame. While sugar sends blood sugar high and provides empty calories, artificial sweeteners' long term effects are unknown and some studies link them to increased cancer risk. For those who crave soft drinks, water or alternatives like tea are recommended instead.

There are reasons beyond heart health to reduce sugar intake. Excessive sugar intake, especially from sweetened beverages, has been linked with higher calorie intake, higher body weight, and lower intake of vitamins and minerals. Therefore, in this Chinese New Year, I upload my slide for public to increase their awareness in scaling back sugar intake during this festive season.
this paper was presented in the ONE DAY NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON "RECENT ADVANCES AND CURRENT TRENDS IN BIO-SCIENCE" held on 8th February 2013 at ASAN MEMORIAL COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCE, Chennai-100.

3 Sugar Craving Killers You Need to Know
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ― Hippocrates
Jenna, a mother of four, has struggled with a sweet tooth her whole life.
“When I was a kid, I’d have a bowl of cereal in the morning. It came in an attractive box with the cartoon character on front, and I’d eat it without a second thought.”
She had Oreos and Twinkies at school, but the apple and sandwich her mom made for her would go uneaten in her lunch box. Dinner of course, wouldn’t be complete without dessert, like a big helping of chocolate cake or apple pie.
“This went on for years and years. Although my parents always encouraged me to eat healthy, I’d always look for some form of sweets every time we ate.”
It wasn’t until Jenna had kids of her own when she finally realized how damaging sugar addiction is.
She went on: “I’d try to kick my dependence on it and fail every time, so I kind of gave up at some point in my adult life. But what really woke me up was seeing my own children go through the same problems I had at their age. They were gaining weight, had a hard time focusing on their school work, and they’d get lethargic after their sugar rush. Plus, it was wreaking havoc on their teeth too.”
So Jenna knew she needed an intervention not just for herself, but also for her family.
With the support of her husband and health professionals, Jenna managed to overcome her addiction to sugar. Not only that, she also spared her kids from growing up with an out-of-control sweet tooth.
“Our family doctor referred us to a nutritionist and a fitness coach. It’s only been a couple of months now, but I think that we’re on the right track,” she shared.

Eating too much sugar may be devastating for your health.
Added sugar, which is the sugar found in sodas, sweets, and other processed foods, has been shown to contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and tooth decay (1Trusted Source, 2Trusted Source, 3Trusted Source).
Research suggests that most Americans eat anywhere from 55–92 grams of added sugar daily, which is equivalent to 13–22 teaspoons of table sugar each day — representing about 12–16% of daily calorie intake (4Trusted Source).
This is significantly more than the Dietary Guidelines for Americans’ recommendation of getting less than 10% of your daily calories from added sugars (5).
The World Health Organization goes a step further, recommending less than 5% of calories from added sugar for optimal health (6Trusted Source).
However, it can be challenging to slash added sugars from your diet. This article lists 13 simple ways to stop eating so much sugar.
3. Sugar in Coke
Sugar is an empty calorie.
It robs the body of the nutrients required
for the body to process it.
Sugar sends your blood sugar sky high
where it does damage to your arteries.
Sugar is also exceedingly easy to over
consume. For example in a can of coke
there is 10 packets of sugar.
4. Artificial Sweeteners in Diet
Coke
There are 4 ½ packets of aspartame in diet coke.
These sweeteners are made in a lab from who knows
what chemicals.
Further, we have no idea what these chemicals will do
to the body with sustained long term use.
There is little evidence that these sugar substitutes
actually help people loose weight.
There is evidence that they may contribute to weight
gain.
5. How to Deal with Sugar
Cravings
Eat plenty of fat, protein, and nutrient-dens
foods on a regular basis kills your appetite.
Eat some fruits the sweetness will help curb
your sweet cravings.
Find a good dark chocolate it has just enough
sweetness for you to be satisfying without
being unhealthy.
Go for a walk just getting away from the
temptation Is usually helpful.
6. Which is better for me Coke
or Diet?
The obvious answer is Drink tea, Drink water
But if you must drink a soft drink ask yourself: “
a soft drink loaded with sugars (high fructose
corn syrup) OR the chemicals in a diet coke.
Had artificial sweeteners been found 100%
safe, without any side effects, the obvious
choice would be diet coke, which save 100
calories per cup.
Long term health effects are unclear.
