To directly address the lack of diversity among suppliers of legal services to major corporations in the United
States, a number of Fortune 500 companies have pledged to direct a percentage of their legal department
budget spend to minority or woman owned law firms (MWOLFs). While spend with MWOLFs has grown
significantly through endeavors, like The Inclusion Initiative, from $42.6M in 2010 to over $140M in 2013, a
number of challenges towards proper implementation remain. Chief among them is that often, the MWOLFs
lack a deep bench of lawyers with the requisite “big law” or in-house experience in the specific areas needed
to tackle the complex legal issues that their prospective Fortune 500 clients have.
