This document summarizes the causes and consequences of racial prejudice. It discusses how white privilege permeates all aspects of life for white Americans and how attempting to be colorblind can distort the reality of racism. It also outlines the negative psychological and emotional consequences of racism for both white and black people, such as anxiety, guilt, and defensiveness in whites and depression, low self-esteem, and health issues in blacks. The document also describes how prolonged exposure to racism can lead to alienation from oneself and others according to Fanon's aspects of alienation, as well as Utsey, Bolden, and Brown's six racism-related reactions like race-related trauma and fatigue.

2. Racism and White Americans

– Unearned entitlements
– Conferred dominance
– Permeates all aspects of life
Colorblind Racial Attitudes: an attempt to distort the
reality of racism in the lives of non-Whites but the
complexity of it allows for anyone to adopt it.
3. Racism and White Americans con’t
• A person internalizes race-related messages in
the context of what society and the developing
ego allows. (Kovel, 1970)
• Anxiety and racial intolerance are interrelated
• Racial prejudice:
- defensive efforts of ego and superego.
-ego strengthening experience.
-protection from identity loss.
• Negative consequences: psychological/emotional
distress (guilt, shame, anxiety, confusion….)
4. Racism and the Black Experience

– White Supremacy
– Oppression
– Racism
6. Prolonged Exposure to Racism
• Fanon’s (1963) 5 Aspects of Alienation:
– Alienation from self
– Alienation from significant others
– Alienation from others in general
– Alienation from culture and history
– Alienation from social praxis
Unearned entitlements: things all should enjoy (safety, valued for contributions etc..)
Conferred dominance: Power over non-Whites
Aspects of life: hiring, interpersonal: sense of entitlement, validation of Whiteness
Colorblind Racial Attitudes (CoBRA) modern form of racism. A complex attitude characterized by a positive cognitive schema which allows anyone to adopt it.
The environment influences racial attitudes.
Relief from anxiety may manifest itself through prejudice and racial animosity.
White Supremacy: System of power, domination (conscious/unconscious) embedded in logic, thought, speech, action, perception of Whites.
Oppression: The blocking of a person’s human evolution. Jim Crow laws an example. Embedded in structure of society.
Racism results in unequal distribution of resources, privilege of one group over another, acts of aggression and violence towards less powerful groups.
Alienation from others- characterized by violence between Blacks and Whites
Alienation from social praxis- denial of self-determination, socialized activity which leads to human potential
Trauma: spiritual,,psych & physio devastation following the witness, direct experience or awareness of threat or harm to one based on skin color
Fatigue: Psych & physio exhaustion in response to chronic exposure to racism/oppression. Effects daily routine but unnoticed because of other daily challenges (family, finances etc…)
Anticipatory reaction: defense mechanism developed after being victim. Causes person to be alert and aware at all times around Whites and can increase anxiety.
Stress & Distress: physio symptons- tension headaches,, muscle tightness, lack of concentration, anxiety etc…
Frustration: feelings of powerlessness which can lead to anger, irritability, dissatisfaction etc..
Confusion: In the midst of a racial exchange asks: “Why Me?” “Who Am I” Uncertainly now exists where it wasn’t before. One second-guesses themselves.
