The CMS will delay enforcing the HIPAA 5010 compliance deadline from January 1, 2012 to March 31, 2012. This is due to industry feedback that testing between covered entities and their trading partners was not complete enough to ensure compliance by the original deadline. The HIPAA 5010 standards regulate electronic transmission of healthcare claims and communications, and are important for the transition to the ICD-10 clinical coding system. CMS continues to encourage covered entities to work with trading partners to be compliant with the new HIPAA standards.
