14. Awkward………. Things to avoid saying during an interview: If I get the job, I will have to have every Wednesday night off to attend my court ordered AA meeting… I am an active member of the KKK and being sought after by the FBI… I will need a minimum of $75,000 to start… Prison was fun but I wouldn’t want to do it again… Those glasses make you look very attractive… I and my previous employer didn’t see eye to eye… No, I have no questions. You went over everything…
15. Professionalism Posture and the way your carry yourself says a lot about you! Try to look natural, not nervous. Don’t slouch, sit up and look interested. What to do with your hands: Place them in your lap Use them for emphasis, not aggressiveness Firm handshake, don’t appear weak. Eye contact is important but don’t stare the person down. Don’t cross your arms. Can display defensiveness. If offered something to drink, accept. But don’t make it a distraction.
16. Apparel Is a jogging suit appropriate for an interview? Dress “industry appropriate” airing on the side of conservatism. Guys: if you were black pants, wear black socks! Jeans and a T-shirt aren't appropriate attire. Ladies: miniskirts wouldn’t be a good choice. Solid colors without designs would be a good match. Army boots don’t work with any outfit! Good rule of thumb: “If you wouldn’t wear it to church, don’t wear it to the interview!”
Editor's Notes
-often be high costs for companies associated with training employees-Can be a problem for professionals applying for a job that exceeds the job requirement
The better able you are to define the employers needs before you interview, the higher the likelihood of an offer.Interview with their needs in mind and focus on outcomes they need, not your superhero skills.
Employers face turn-over from all sections of the company.Your leaving is no more probable than anyone else’s IF you have discerned you can be successful in that position.Talk about what you will contribute, not what you have done in excess.Focus on the job they have open, not all the other tasks you have accomplished. Talk in terms of what you can deliver, give examples.
If you communicate enthusiasm for the market niche and challenges of that particular job, this goes away.Once you discern their top priority, address with a sense of creative adventure.Be well prepared on their market and the challenges.Ask good questions about their plans for the future, such as follow on products or market conditioning, you demonstrate a keen interest.
If you keep the focus on how you can expand what you do and learn a new approach, employers won’t think of you as a misfit. Let them know what you find desirable about their work environment or market niche.Be specific: Don’t use generalities like, “I’m excited about what you do.”Say, instead, “This opportunity appeals to me because xxx.” And make the xxx about them, not you.
If you are not entirely honest, hide or misrepresent, you can be fired on the spot.Plus, these are lies you will have to maintain.Better to be honest and help the employer see that though you have had more senior responsibilities, there are still things you can learn and contribute that are unique. And this means including months and years of previous employment and date of college graduation.
Convey how you can make the manager look good.Ask what their priorities are, what their metrics for judging success in the role are and speak only to those.Mention your job is to make them look good and ask what being part of the team would mean.Be sure you are not conveying superiority or a condescending manner.Give examples without stating, “This is how I made my last manager look good.” Talk about the team success.
(Level of experience)--When an employee with a lot of work experience joins your firm, he brings a lot of experience which is good for the company. Previous experience is the most valuable thing in a prospective employee and the more experienced he is, the more able he is to deal with difficult situations.(Healthy competition)--When a highly experienced and well qualified employee joins the company, it will give rise to healthy competition. The rest of the employees will try to match the high standards being set by the more experienced employee and work harder. Thus a healthy competition will be started, which will improve the outputs of all the employees in the long run.(Source of inspiration)--The more experienced and well educated employee will become a source of inspiration for other employees, who will want to learn from his experience and will perform better in the long term.
Some companies value self expression, however majority do not. This becomes a dress code concern along with the effect of discrimination. Most business have a written dress code that prohibits visible tattoos. In addition, these tattoos may go against the company image. Some visible tattoos can be covered with make up during the interview process. But this could be similar to lying similar to your resume.Removal is always an option but can become extremely expensive. (See example)
Again, similar to tattoos, body piercing can be another form of self expression that employees have problems with.Although discrimination can be founded on Race, Color, Religion, Gender, Nationality, Origin, or Sexual Preference, Self expression isn’t on of them! From a legal standpoint, a employer that doesn’t hire a person because of body modifications isn’t doing anything illegal.
Hygiene in the workplace can be a touchy subject. What one person thinks is ok is offensive to another.A clean hair cut and not-outlandish make up will go far.Take a shower and brush your teeth just like your parents told you.Don’t overdo the perfume. As stated previously perfume could be a negative trigger point for the interviewer.
These are just a few statements that could make the interview very awkward or don’t right uncomfortable.Don’t bring up that you have court ordered anything.Extra curricular activities are one thing. Saying your with the KKK could spell disaster.Stating a minimum salary before negotiations start could mean your digging.Similar to the court ordered statement. Don’t mentioned prison unless asked.Do not under any circumstance compliment or hit on the interviewer. CREEPY!Unless asked directly, do not mentioned previous conflicts with past employers. You HAVE to ask questions. Be sincere and don’t make some outlandish statement. No questions asked means your not interested in the position.
If an individual looks nervous or “shifty”, it could mean there not apt for pressure. Just appear natural. Slouching in a seat doesn’t make you look relaxed. It makes you look lazy. Sit up and be attentive. Hand placement is crucial during an interview. Often your hands have a mind of there own. Fold them in your lap or put them on your thighs. Use them for emphasis but don’t make sudden aggressive movements.A firm handshake means your trying to be in control. If your handshake is weak, you appear submissive which could be a turnoff. Be gender neutral. Eye contact is crucial but don’t appear psychotic. During the interview, don’t cross your arms. This is a natural sign of defense. If the interviewer asks you for something to drink, accept. Their just trying to make you comfortable. If your not thirsty, respectfully decline but thank them either way.
You want to appear professional right? Don’t wear a jogging suit. Industry appropriate means if your working in a bank, a polo might not be professional enough. Black pants and black socks are a must. If you don’t have any clean, buy new ones!Jeans and a t-shirt are too casual. Even the best looking jeans won’t work. For ladies, conservative is better. Save the miniskirts for after you get the job.Wear solid colors. Patterns and designs can become distractive.Even though you love your army boots, don’t wear them to the interview. Dress like your attending church.
