1. The document discusses different types of clutches used in vehicles, including single-plate, multi-plate, cone, centrifugal, electromagnetic, and hydraulic clutches.
2. Key parts of a clutch are identified as the flywheel, friction disc, pressure plate, and diaphragm spring. The flywheel is mounted on the crankshaft and keeps running as long as the engine is working. The friction disc transfers power from the flywheel to the driven shaft.
3. A clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the transmission and allows for changing gears by disengaging power transmission between the drive shaft and driven shaft when the clutch pedal is pressed.
A clutch is a mechanism which enables the rotary motion of one shaft to be transmitted at will to the second shaft, whose axis is coincident with that of first. Clutch is located between the engine and gearbox. When the clutch is engaged, the power flows from the engine to the rear wheels through the transmission system and the vehicle moves when the clutch is disengaged, the power is not transmitted to the rear wheels and the vehicle stops, while the engine is still running.
Clutch is a mechanism which enables the rotary motion of one shaft to be transmitted, when desired, to a second shaft the axis of which is coincident with that of first.
Clutch is used to engage or disengage the engine to the transmission or gear box.

2. What is Clutch?
• Clutch is a mechanical device used in the
transmission system of a vehicle.
• It engages and disengages power
transmission, especially from a drive shaft to
a driven shaft.

3. Important parts of Clutch
1. Flywheel: This clutch part is mounted on the
crankshaft, it keeps running as long as the engine
is working. A friction disc is mounted on the outer
side of the flywheel

4. What is Clutch?
2. Friction disc: the friction disc could be single or multiple
discs depending on its application. It is made an of material
with a high coefficient of friction. The friction disc is
mounted on a drive shaft.

5. Important parts of Clutch
3. Pressure plate: The plate attached to the flywheel is called a
pressure plate. It spins along with the flywheel. Covering the clutch
plate from one side, it presses it against the friction plate. When the
clutch pedal is applied, it clamps down on the clutch plate and enables
swift
gear movements and prevents
vibrations that result in wear and tear.

Spring
6. Important parts of Clutch
4. Diaphragm Spring :
When we apply the clutch pedal, the motion is directly transmitted to
the diaphragm spring. This makes the diaphragm spring to pull the
pressure plate away from the clutch plate and allow free movement of
gears. the function of the springs is to move the friction disc
back and forth. Clutches use
diaphragm spring and levers help to
retract the spring.
7. Use Of Coil Springs in Clutch
In an clutch you can see a few coil springs on the clutch disc. These are used to
smooth out the fluctuations and vibrations from the engine power output. It is clear
that the hub and disc are not directly connected. The engine power first reaches
the disk then it transfers to the springs and finally to the output hub.
This means that the springs will
dampen out most of the power flow
fluctuation from the engine and the
motion transferred to the
vehicle will be much smoother.
8. How Clutch Works?
A hydraulic system transfer the clutch motion to the centre
of spring. When diaphram spring is pressed the power
transmission discontinued, during this time You can make a
gear change.
The clutch pedal is released after the gear
change and the power flows continuous
again in the engine, this is how the clutch
work.

9. Different types of clutches:
The following stated below represent different types of clutch used on
engines
•Single-plate clutch
•Multi-plate clutch
•Cone clutch
•Centrifugal clutch
•Electromagnetic clutch
•Hydraulic clutch
Muti Plate clutch
Single Plate Clutch
11. The small-size multi-plate clutch delivers nearly double
torque compared to a single plate clutch of diameter.
Where high torque output is required, like a pickup truck,
a single plate clutch fails to provide the much frictional
force (between the flywheel and clutch plates) that is
required to provide such high torque, Therefore in a heavy
vehicle such as a pickup truck multi-plate clutch is used.
Multi-plate clutch
12. The cone clutch is a type of friction clutch that has
cone-shaped frictional areas. These types of clutches
are commonly used in synchromesh and epicyclic
gearboxes.
Cone clutch
13. Centrifugal Clutch is a type of
clutch in which centrifugal force
is used to connect the engine
drive shaft with the shaft of the
transmission. It is placed in
between the
engine flywheel and the
transmission system. Its main
function is to connect the engine
shaft with the transmission
shaft. It works more efficiently at
Centrifugal Clutch
14. Electromagnetic clutches operate via an electric actuation, but
transmit torque mechanically. When the clutch is required to
actuate, voltage/current is applied to the clutch coil. The coil
becomes an electromagnet and produces magnetic lines of
flux. This flux is then transferred through the small air gap
between the field and the rotor. The rotor portion of the clutch
becomes magnetized and sets up a magnetic loop that
attracts the armature. The armature is pulled against the rotor
and a frictional force is applied at contact. Within a relatively
short time the load is accelerated to match the speed of the
rotor, thereby engaging the armature and the output hub of the
clutch. In most instances, the rotor is constantly rotating with
the input all the time.
Electromagnetic clutch
15. The hydraulic clutch is a type of automotive clutch that uses hydraulic fluid rather than a
cable to move the clutch plate. These clutches have a master cylinder linked to the
clutch pedal, which moves the fluid inside the clutch lining with high pressure when the
driver presses the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch. The hydraulic clutch consists of
various parts, such
as the clutch pedal, master cylinder,
hydraulic pipe, slave cylinder, release
fork, release bearing, diaphragm
spring, pressure plate, splined sleeves,
clutch plate, and flywheel.
