A study analyzed data from over 2.8 million patients in 885 hospitals to determine if clinical pharmacy services and staffing levels were associated with lower mortality rates. The study found that 7 clinical pharmacy services were linked to reduced mortality, including pharmacist involvement in drug use evaluation, education, adverse drug reaction management, and medical rounds. Higher numbers of pharmacy administrators and clinical pharmacists per occupied bed were also associated with lower mortality. The number of clinical pharmacy factors impacting mortality doubled from 1989 to 1998, indicating the important role of clinical pharmacy in improving patient outcomes.
