2. Cloud computing is a model for
enabling ubiquitous, convenient,
on-demand network access to a
shared pool of configurable
computing resources (e.g.,
networks, servers, storage,
applications, and services) that can
be rapidly provisioned and released
with minimal management effort or
service provider interaction (NIST).
3. Myth
Fact
By moving your data to the cloud, you will have
zero control over your technology.
Reduce resources spent to continually upgrade
software and maintain hardware.
On-premises data storage is far safer than cloud
storage.
Reputable cloud-based companies – best
security!
Eliminate the need for people to handle
security.
4. Myth
Fact
You won’t be able to monitor your data’s
sovereignty once you move to the cloud.
The company can always access data no matter where
it is located.
Moving to the cloud means you are going to have to
move everything, which could be very disruptive.
Take it slow and understand how it works; still in
control!
Many companies are now embracing the reduced costs and agility that come with moving their data to the cloud. However, there are still many contradictory opinions regarding which is a safer way of storing company data — on-premises storage or cloud storage? In view of this, we are going to start by dispelling the biggest myths about cloud computing that are making their rounds on the internet.
The fact is that by moving your data to the cloud, you can reduce the pains and resources spent to continually upgrade software and maintain hardware. The IT department of a firm can focus on the primary business instead of focusing fixing services.
It’s a no-brainer that the security of one’s business is one of the greatest concerns, especially when considering cloud storage. Nowadays hiring a full team of security professionals can be costly, especially for small and medium companies. But, by working with a reputable cloud-based company like Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform you gain access to the best security any money can buy for your business.
Another thing we learnt in our textbook is that people are the greatest security weakness of all. The good thing about the cloud is that it uses technology to eliminate the need for people to handle security.
What it means is that the physical location of a company can command where its business data is going to be held. For example all public companies in Europe are required by law to store their corporate data in the European Union. But this is not something that a company need to worry about because most cloud providers today offer a vast range of data locations, so the company can always have access no matter where the company is located.
When a company starts seriously considering moving vast amounts of its data to the cloud, it’s easy to see why that could be a challenge. However, it is certainly not undoable. As with any change a company is going to make with business, the company should take it slow to ensure it understands how the cloud truly works. Additionally, the staff will still feel like they are in control, especially if they are so used to network-based storage.
