Q1. Why did the children in Miss Beam’s school have a ‘lame day, a deaf day, a maimed day, a dumb day
and a blind day?’
Ans. The children in Miss Beam’s school had a ‘lame day, a deaf day, a maimed day, a dumb day and a
blind day’ in order to get a real appreciation and understanding of misfortune into the young minds and also
to make them the participants in the misfortune too.
Answers in brief
Q2. What kind of lessons did the children at the school have?
Ans. The children were taught the most basic of skills such as spelling, adding, subtracting, multiplying and
writing. They were given interesting talks and taught to understand the afflictions of others around them.
Q3. What did the writer realise while he was walking with the girl on her blind day?
Ans. While walking with the girl on her blind day, the writer realized that he had become ten times more
thoughtful than he ever thought he could be. He also realized that describing things made them more
interesting.

Q4. What did the writer see when he looked down from the window?

Ans 1. a The bandaged girl is the speaker.
b. It would be cheating because she thinks it is a point of honour not to peep.
c. The speaker feels that being blind was awful because one feels one is going to be hit by something every
moment.
Ans 2. a Miss Beam is the speaker.
b. She said this, when the author felt he was ten times more thoughtful than he ever thought he could be.
c. ‘My system’ refers to Miss Beam’s innovative teaching methods, which valued humanity over facts and
thoughtfulness over thoughts.
