Celebration of
Diversity
Melissa Clarke
What is Diversity?
The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.
It means understanding that each individual is unique,
and recognizing our individual differences.
These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity,
gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical
abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the
exploration of these differences in a safe, positive,
and nurturing environment. It is about
understanding each other and moving beyond simple
tolerance to embracing and celebrating the
rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.

The Faces of Diversity
Recognition and celebration
of diversity
empowers students,
strengthens their
connection to the learning
environment and
promotes their ownership of
the learning process.
Intolerance and prejudice result often
from lack of knowledge and
apprehension over the lack of
familiarity....so....what better way to
stop the intolerance than by
teaching the appropriate behavior????
Response to Intolerance
Have the students have lunch together for one
week and return with 10 facts they discovered
about the other child
Discuss difference and commonalities in a joint
project to be presented to the class
Peer mediation/conflict resolution
Family meetings (restorative justice)
Detention, suspension, or citation
Response to Intolerance
Support Programs

* Bully/Victim Support groups
* Peer Intervention groups
* Daily Message:
“You were meant to do wonderful things this day...go out and
do all those wonderful things that you were destined to do!”

Editor's Notes

  • #2 The purpose of this brief presentation is to identify the need to implement a conscious effort of support for diversity and identify ways to increase awareness and celebration.

  • #4 These are the many ways in which diversity can be observed in every classroom.
  • #5 The importance of recognition and celebration of diversity is reflected in how students act towards not only each other but the learning community as a whole. He helps builds students confidence to show there very best when discrimination is lessened and differences are celebrated.
  • #6 It is human nature to have misguided reactions when they lack knowledge or understanding about something that is different from what they have been exposed to. Students need guidance on how to react more positively to the many differences that surround them on a daily basis. It is our jobs as educators to teach the appropriate behavior to differences.
  • #7 These are just a few examples of how educators can intervene and be proactive to intolerance. photo courtesy of: Melissa Clarke
  • #8 It is important to provide the proper support systems within a school community where students can not only be guided properly but have appropriate systems to look towards for help when needed.
