The purpose of the Interpersonal Communication Project (ICP) is twofold: first, to develop an interpersonal communication design that demonstrates your commitment to develop and maintain healthy, healing, and holy relationships through effective communication and, second, to demonstrate your ability to compose and effectively deliver a message with clear, purposeful, and well-organized content and attention to both verbal and nonverbal communication principles.
The content for your ICP will be built throughout the course. You will be responsible for producing a 9–10-minute video recording of yourselfpresenting this project and create an accompanying PowerPoint presentation that highlights your main points and clearly discloses your sources. The video file will be uploaded to YouTube and the PowerPoint presentation will be submitted on Blackboard along with a link to the video. Do not submit your PowerPoint until your video has been successfully uploaded and processed for viewing.
Your presentation must include the following sections/main points:
1. Introduction:
Introduce yourself and provide a very brief preview of your project in a way that engages the audience.
2. Overarching goal:
Articulate an overarching goal for your life. This goal should, ideally, be succinctly formulated as a single phrase. Identify of the role and importance of interpersonal communication for enlarging your conversation in the context of this goal.
3. Background and behavioral blend:
Describe how your background and behavioral blend influences your communication style, both positively and negatively.
4. Communication barriers:

5. Resources and strategies:
Describe the most helpful resources that you have discovered and explain how these provide strategic solutions to overcoming your communication barriers/challenges.

Oceans (320) of Opportunity: Rebooting a GE Explorations course, Course Design Institute and pICT SDSU
The popular OCEAN320 The Oceans course was rebooted from the ground up to (1) promote SDSU's new GE capacities and goals and (2) capitalize upon the strengths of online learning. Every quanta of new course content was reversed-engineered from learning outcomes designed to help students appreciate the scientific context and societal complexity of major oceanographic issues, such as ocean warming and acidification, overfishing and aquaculture, and petroleum exploitation and risk. The course is structured into scaffolding learning modules, each comprised of an integrated sequence of live Wimba sessions and an array of student-centered activities based on readings, videos, and web-based simulations. This session will report on the major findings of three large-scale studies examining the impact of instructor immediacy behaviors in recorded online videoconferencing sessions, the Wimba online classroom, and Second Life. The presenters will describe the communicative behaviors that enhance instructor immediacy and closeness with the students and offer practical recommendations for application in different online learning environments.How i use Blackboard Discussion Boards

Providing Online Support for Student Writing
With class sizes increasing, it is becoming increasingly difficult to support research and writing activities. The extra workload associated with grading, checking assignments, and providing support outside of the classroom can become overwhelming. Through my experience in the Course Design Institute, I have learned about several tools that will be useful for increasing research and writing activities while maintaining a manageable workload. I have incorporated the use of online tools to support writing activities in a large undergraduate course, including Blackboard, Google Docs, and Wimba Classroom. In this session I will describe what worked and what didn’t work, and I will provide a brief demonstration of the techniques that have been most useful.
An Experimental Study of Instructor Immediacy
This study examined the effects of instructor immediacy and communication media on student perceptions, cognitive learning, perceived learning, and satisfaction in a virtual classroom. Participants experienced teaching sessions that manipulated immediacy (high vs. low) and media (video vs. photo). Results showed that students in the high-immediacy groups rated the instructor higher on immediacy measures and performed better on cognitive tests than those in low-immediacy groups. The group with high immediacy and video scored highest overall. While all groups showed cognitive gains, those exposed to higher immediacy learned more. Future research could address limitations and further explore the role of immediacy and media in virtual learning.

The popular OCEAN320 The Oceans course was rebooted from the ground up to (1) promote SDSU's new GE capacities and goals and (2) capitalize upon the strengths of online learning. Every quanta of new course content was reversed-engineered from learning outcomes designed to help students appreciate the scientific context and societal complexity of major oceanographic issues, such as ocean warming and acidification, overfishing and aquaculture, and petroleum exploitation and risk. The course is structured into scaffolding learning modules, each comprised of an integrated sequence of live Wimba sessions and an array of student-centered activities based on readings, videos, and web-based simulations. This session will report on the major findings of three large-scale studies examining the impact of instructor immediacy behaviors in recorded online videoconferencing sessions, the Wimba online classroom, and Second Life. The presenters will describe the communicative behaviors that enhance instructor immediacy and closeness with the students and offer practical recommendations for application in different online learning environments.How i use Blackboard Discussion Boards
The document discusses how a teacher uses discussion boards on Blackboard to increase student engagement and understanding of course material. It provides examples of different types of discussion board prompts used, including getting-to-know-you posts, summaries of assigned readings, focused discussions of readings, and group discussions. Providing Online Support for Student Writing
With class sizes increasing, it is becoming increasingly difficult to support research and writing activities. The extra workload associated with grading, checking assignments, and providing support outside of the classroom can become overwhelming. Through my experience in the Course Design Institute, I have learned about several tools that will be useful for increasing research and writing activities while maintaining a manageable workload. I have incorporated the use of online tools to support writing activities in a large undergraduate course, including Blackboard, Google Docs, and Wimba Classroom. In this session I will describe what worked and what didn’t work, and I will provide a brief demonstration of the techniques that have been most useful.
An Experimental Study of Instructor Immediacy
This study examined the effects of instructor immediacy and communication media on student perceptions, cognitive learning, perceived learning, and satisfaction in a virtual classroom. Participants experienced teaching sessions that manipulated immediacy (high vs. low) and media (video vs. photo). Results showed that students in the high-immediacy groups rated the instructor higher on immediacy measures and performed better on cognitive tests than those in low-immediacy groups. The group with high immediacy and video scored highest overall. While all groups showed cognitive gains, those exposed to higher immediacy learned more. Future research could address limitations and further explore the role of immediacy and media in virtual learning.

The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.
Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
