Tàrraco
When the Romans arrived in Tarragona, the city was inhabited by the Iberians and both left many of their architectures
in our city.
Like the aqueduct (Devil's Bridge), the Via Augusta, the Roman walls, the Roman circus, the amphitheatre, the forum of
the province, The arch of Bará, etc..., are part of the world heritage by the UNESCO.
During the medieval time the city survived the different conquests by the Arabs, above all, and other governors. Then,
the city grows taking advantage of Roman remains such as the praetorian tower.
The modern time for Tarragona was marked by wars that made the reconstruction of the walls necessary. The Segadors
war, the plague and the looting of pirates left Tarragona depopulated and poor for a long time. The opening of the ports
made reborn in Tarragona a business maritime.
During the contemporary period the city suffers the consequences of the French war. The city is extended in two areas:
high (part of the cathedral – Casc Antic) and low (the part of the port - Serrallo). It will still have to suffer the Spanish
civil war. After its recovery, in the fifties the chemical industries of Tarragona are installed here favouring its recovery.
Festivals
In Tarragona there are many festivities, and we like all of them!!
Carnival is celebrated in February. There are a lot of parades and quite all the population participate.
In March or April, we celebrate Easter. It is a very cultural and religious festivity.
Saint George is celebrated on the 23rd of April in all Catalonia, where the boys give roses to girls and the girls give books to boys.
Saint Magí is the patron saint of the city and it’s celebrated on the 19th of August.
Saint Tecla is the most important festivity and it lasts for 15 days (in September). On the 23rd of September there is a procession
and a display that has a lot of years of antiquity.
The International competition of fireworks is celebrated in summer at the beach.
And the festivity of the Catalan national day, on the 11th of September. On that day we made competitions of human towers,
when the competitors are the groups of the city and the rest of Catalonia.
In quite all the festivities there are human towers and sardanes (Catalonian typical dance) accompanied by a group of music that we
call: Cobla.
Our football team is called Gimnàstic de Tarragona (Nàstic).
Saint Tecla
Our favourite store
The shop that we like most is Bershka. This is situated in the shopping centre Parc Centrala, but there are many more
stores where we also like to buy clothes.
