However, it serve as the mean of Enterprise Architecture rather than the end. EA is not only about drawing some high level architecture drawings. It is long term guideline not only for the enterprise mechanical architecture but also used to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing.
It is intended for both business and engineering community. It shows how business take advantage of different resources which include not only IT but also human and financial resources. It is not intended as the guideline on how to design or create these resources. EA should not be confused as the enterprise wide solution architecture.
Master plan and notional architecture is delivered in architecture drawing sets and spread sheet for the purpose of intuitive and comprehension by the business community. The notional architecture drawing is not as rigid a the engineering blueprint, It is flexible and creative.

Mapping the Enterprise
The first thing for EA professional to do is to map the Enterprise for every one to comprehend a tangible enterprise. This presentation shares Enterprise Map experience which has been useful for both business and technical community. In the speaker’s experience, the Enterprise Map is the few EA artifact that has retained its value long after delivery. While other EA artifacts end up as shelf-ware (and hence long forgotten in the EA repository), sets of Enterprise Maps make it much easier to explain EA concepts (at least in comparison to the Zachman framework).
Not only does the Enterprise Map help to unravel the “big picture” of the enterprise, but it also facilitates enterprise collaboration. Gaining a true understanding of the enterprise is a collaborate process; this process is well-illustrated in the story of the blind man and the elephant. Thus, the formulation of the Enterprise Map also serves to create a culture of collaboration throughout the enterprise.
One can draw parallels between the Enterprise Map (and its function as the “ground work” of EA) and an engineering survey. The Enterprise Map is not just a glorified diagram output from a complicated EA system; rather, it is built piece-by-piece from the hard work and total participation of various stakeholders. In fact, the Enterprise Map does not require a complicated EA system – it can be prepared with basic tools and manual processes (e.g., Microsoft Visio / SmartDraw).

Insurance Forum Fairy Tale SBLI
Phil Crampe was brought in to improve the multi-channel marketing strategy at Savings Bank Life Insurance using data analytics. He captured customer data from various sources to create a single customer view. This allowed him to use descriptive analytics to identify customer segments and predictive models to find new prospects. Phil also implemented new technology to integrate data, perform advanced analytics, and optimize campaigns. As a result, Savings Bank Life Insurance saw improved response rates, conversion rates, value per policy, and sales within budget targets during a recession.

1) Between 2005-2014, there were 586 food recalls in Australia, averaging 59 recalls per year. In 2014, the top 3 reasons for recalls were undeclared allergens, microbial contamination, and foreign matter.
2) Undeclared allergens made up 21% of recalls, with peanuts, dairy, and wheat being the top undeclared allergens. Processed foods and confectionary were the most common culprit product categories.
3) Proper food labeling is important to inform consumers about allergens, ingredients, storage, and other details. Legislation in Australia and other countries mandate clear labeling of certain allergens and substances.
Practice EA in three tiers
Suggest to practice EA in a three tier approach rather than a big bang. Point out EA is a planning effort rather than an engineering effort. EA is not the enterprise wide solution architecture. Clarify the confusion of business capability and business process. EA is not business process centric it is the mean to support the end of business capability. Introduce the concept of business floor plan and EA landscape. The business floor plan is similar to the floor plan of a house. EA landscape to present the situation of usage such as the landscape of application, data and technology. Practical EA use the popular EA method such as FEAF, TOGAF, DODAF to design the segment architecture .
Metaframeworks: making the Blueprint more accessible
This is an old slidedeck (March 2006) that I rediscovered the other day on my filesystem, but it still seems relevant in that, even at that early stage, it illustrates strong crosslinks between enterprise-architecture and systems-thinking - particularly service-oriented architectures, the 'tetradian' dimensions (here as machines, knowledge, people and business-purpose), and a somewhat-extended version of Stafford Beer's classic Viable Systems Model. It's also slightly unusual in that it cross-references to FEAF (US Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework) rather than TOGAF, as we'd found the latter to be unhelpful and misleading for that particular client. The client themselves were in the logistics industry - hence the pseudo-logo in the upper left of each slide.
It was a real presentation for a real client, presenting to other architects in our team some research I'd been doing, on how we could rethink our approach to enterprise-architecture as we started to break out of the classic IT-centric box. It's in a style I wouldn't use these days - way too many words! - and it's been somewhat 'de-identified' for reasons of commercial confidentiality, but otherwise it's exactly as presented to my colleagues at that client.
One minor note: the 'X/C/M/P' extensions to the Viable System Model, in slides 19, 20 and 28, relate to work we'd been doing at the time on integrating quality-system concerns - management of exceptions, corrective-action, issue-tracking and process-improvement - into both enterprise-architecture and the Viable System Model itself. I haven't seen any other reference to this type of integration, either before or since: it may be useful to quite a few people, on both the enterprise-architecture and systems-thinking sides of that discussion, and also to quality-system folks as well.
In short, yes, it's old, but it may still be useful for some folks in enterprise-architectures and elsewhere. Hope it helps, anyway.

Requirements Capabilities, Alignment, and Software Success - Kappelman ASEE 2015
For over four decades, IT strategy has been about the alignment of technology with the needs of the “customer,” be it an organization, business, end user, or device. The most important part of system acquisition is deciding what to build or buy, as it is better to deliver no solution at all than it is to deliver the wrong solution. But there are two distinct dimensions to getting requirements and ensuring that they, and the IT solution that results, not only aligns with the business as it is, but is built in such a way that it can sustain that alignment in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner. Specifically, (1) narrow requirements, which focus on the short-term needs for specific parts, functions, or processes of the business; and, (2) broad requirements, which focus on a comprehensive, enterprise-wide approach with holistic and longer-range objectives like simplicity, suppleness, and total cost of ownership. We typically call these “Systems Analysis and Design” and “Enterprise Architecture” respectively. Ideally, organizations should be able to do both well, and effectively balance the inevitable tradeoffs between them. Sadly, in the vast majority of organizations, that is not yet the case.
Professor Kappelman will present the results of a ground-breaking study from the Society for Information Management (SIM) Enterprise Architecture Working Group that developed and validated measures for these two distinct types of requirements capabilities. Findings include:
• Empirical validation that there is, in fact, a difference between requirement capabilities in a narrow or individual system context (i.e., Systems Analysis and Design within the bounds of a specific development project), and requirements capabilities in a broad or enterprise context (i.e., Enterprise Architecture regarding how those individual systems fit together in an enterprise-wide strategic design).
• Strong evidence that requirements capabilities overall are immature, with narrow activities more mature than the corresponding broad enterprise capabilities.
• Solid evidence, based on fifteen years of studies, that software development capabilities are generally maturing, but are still fairly immature.
This research provides requirements engineers, software designers, software developers, and other IT practitioners with tools to assess their own requirements engineering and software development capabilities. and compare them with those of their peers. Suggestions for improvements are made.
