Graphic warning labels on cigarette packs are being introduced in the United States to make health warnings more prominent. Current warnings have been in place for 25 years and are often ignored. New graphic labels will cover 50% of the front and back of packs and 20% of cigarette ads. The FDA is requiring the graphic labels by 2012 under a new law. Public comments on sample labels were collected in 2010 to help select the 9 images and messages that will rotate on packs every few years. Several other countries already use graphic warning labels.
