Creating a Webquest

Welcome: Expanding Your Idioms
Description: Students will learn some of the most popular idiom phrases before practicing the
use of them within a story.
Grade Level: 6-8
Curriculum: English / Language Arts

Introduction:
Have you ever…
watched something so scary that it “made your skin crawl?”
had “ants in your pants?”
been so hungry that your “stomach was growling?”
or bought something so expensive that it “costs an arm and a leg?”
Well these expressions are called idioms, which have true meanings but don’t literally mean
what they say.
Task:
After a lesson learning some of the most popular idioms, students will write a short narrative
(fiction or non-fiction) about a day full of errands and homework. Within their story they will be
required to used, at least, 6 idioms to help describe what their day was like.
Process:
Students will learn some of society’s most popular idioms
Students will write a short narrative involving no less than 6 idioms
Each student will be asked to come to the front of the class to share their story with the
class
The class will then discuss how some stories may be similar according to the idioms that
are used
Evaluation:
The evaluation will be done by considering the creativity that comes from the usage of the
idioms within the stories and by the amount of participation during the class discussion at the
end of everyone’s story telling.
Conclusion:
Idioms give story-telling a new personality that helps make our writing more entertaining.
