Chunking is a strategy that helps improve short term memory by organizing information into meaningful groups. Our short term memory can only hold 5-9 pieces of information at once. Chunking involves taking lists of items like phone numbers, grocery lists, or identification numbers and grouping related pieces of information together. This allows our brain to better structure and remember the information compared to long random lists. Chunking is also helpful because the grouped information can be remembered and recalled independently.
