Château du Blois is a historic castle located in Blois, France that served as a royal residence for several French kings. It has 564 rooms, 75 staircases, and a fireplace in every room across its 100 bedrooms. One of its notable rooms is the Salle d'États Généraux where Jeanne d'Arc went in 1429 to be blessed by the Archbishop before relieving the siege of Orléans.

Jetstream - Adding Cloud-based Computing to the National Cyberinfrastructure
Matt Vaughn from TACC presented this deck at the HPC User Forum in Tucson.
"Jetstream is the first user-friendly, scalable cloud environment for XSEDE. The system enables researchers working at the "long tail of science" and the creation of truly customized virtual machines and computing architectures. It has a web-based user interface integrated with XSEDE via Globus Auth. The architecture is derived from the team's collective experience with CyVerse Atmosphere, Chameleon and Quarry. The system also fosters reproducible, sharable computing with geographically isolated clouds located at Indiana University and TACC."

Accommodating such systems within the enterprise is a challenge, and there have been many recent changes to enterprise IT infrastructures and architectures resulting from the need to support HPC. Although Commercial HPC is part of the Supercomputing family, Commercial HPC has unique focus areas and challenges. Cloud, Data Lake, Industrial Internet, Internet of Things and Big Data have created a huge impact on HPC systems. Each of these initiatives offers new opportunities to both HPC itself and to the enterprise. HPC systems must change themselves to accept and accommodate these changes. This presentation covers how HPC transforms science in a corporate information technology ecosystem. It also explains the differences between Research HPC and Commercial HPC in terms of architecture, usage, resource planning and challenges."

Introduction to the Oakforest-PACS Supercomputer in Japan
In this deck from the DDN User Group at SC16, Prof. Taisuke Boku from the University of Tsukuba & JCAHPC presents: Oakforest-PACS: Overview of the New JCAHPC Computing Facility.
The University of Tokyo, the University of Tsukuba, and Fujitsu Limited recently announced that the Oakforest-PACS massively parallel cluster-type supercomputer, built by Fujitsu and operated by the Joint Center for Advanced High Performance Computing (JCAHPC), has achieved a LINPACK performance result of 13.55 petaflops, as ranked in the November Top500 list for supercomputer performance. Given this, Oakforest-PACS has surpassed the K computer to officially become the highest performance supercomputer in Japan. The system's peak performance is 25 petaflops, which is about 2.2 times that of the K computer.
"Thanks to DDN’s IME Burst Buffer, researchers using Oakforest-PACS at the Joint Center for Advanced High Performance Computing (JCAHPC) are able to improve modeling of fundamental physical systems and advance understanding of requirements for Exascale-level systems architectures. With DDN’s advanced technology, JCAHPC has achieved effective I/O performance exceeding 1TB/s in writing tens of thousands of processes to the same file."

How Researchers Will Benefit from Canada’s National Data Cyberinfrastructure

In August, Compute Canada in partnership with its member institutions announced the results of a multi-million dollar investment in a national big data storage solutions for Canada’s growing community of advanced computing researchers.
“We designed, together with our partners, a Canadian solution that is unique in the world,” says Mark Dietrich, Compute Canada President and CEO. “Globally, this gives Canada and Canadian researchers an advantage, because of Compute Canada’s national platform and federated model for service delivery. We are able to deliver accessible, national solutions on a common platform across the country. These new storage systems, initially capable of storing 40 petabytes of research data, will be allocated on a peer-reviewed basis to support some of Canada’s most accomplished and innovative researchers.”

Epiphany-V: A 1024 processor 64- bit RISC System-On-Chip
Over at the Parallella Blog, Andreas Olafsson writes that the company has reached an important milestone on its next-generation Epiphany-V chip.
"Thanks to a generous grant from DARPA, we just taped out a 16nm chip with 1024 64-bit processor cores. To give a comparison, our 4.5B transistor chip is smaller than Apple's latest A10 chip and has 256 times as many processors. The chip offers an 80x processor density advantage over high performance chips from Intel and Nvidia."

It's Time to ROCm!
AMD has been away from the HPC space for a while, but now they are coming back in a big way with an open software approach to GPU computing. The Radeon Open Compute Platform (ROCm) was born from the Boltzman Initiative announced last year at SC15. Now available on GitHub, the ROCm Platform bringing a rich foundation to advanced computing by better integrating the CPU and GPU to solve real-world problems.
"We are excited to present ROCm, the first open-source HPC/ultrascale-class platform for GPU computing that’s also programming-language independent. We are bringing the UNIX philosophy of choice, minimalism and modular software development to GPU computing. The new ROCm foundation lets you choose or even develop tools and a language run time for your application."

InfiniCortex and the Renaissance in Polish Supercomputing

"Over the past two years, InfiniCortex has clearly demonstrated that IB can perform over trans-continental distances, exploiting this technology to create a “Galaxy of Supercomputers” (a term coined by Marek Michalewicz and Yuefan Deng whose research focus is on mathematically optimal network topologies for supercomputers), a worldwide IB network spanning sites across Asia, Europe and North America. Initiated and led by A*STAR CRC (Agency for Science, Technology and Research - Computational Resource Centre in Singapore), the project hit its first major breakthrough at SuperComputing14 (SC14), showcasing a first-time-ever 100G IB transcontinental connection from Singapore to the SC14 venue in New Orleans (USA). This was made possible primarily thanks to the support of TATA Telecommunications, which provided the 100G trans-pacific link from Singapore to the US, and Obisidian Strategics, the Canadian manufacturer of the IB long-range equipment, that made available a number of units to be deployed in the participating sites."

"To achieve good scalability performance on the HPC scientific applications typically involves good understanding of the workload though performing profile analysis, and comparing behaviors of using different hardware which pinpoint bottlenecks in different areas of the HPC cluster. In this session, a selection of HPC applications will be shown to demonstrate various methods of profiling and analysis to determine the bottleneck, and the effectiveness of the tuning to improve on the application performance."

Epiphany-V: A 1024 processor 64- bit RISC System-On-Chip
Over at the Parallella Blog, Andreas Olafsson writes that the company has reached an important milestone on its next-generation Epiphany-V chip.
"Thanks to a generous grant from DARPA, we just taped out a 16nm chip with 1024 64-bit processor cores. To give a comparison, our 4.5B transistor chip is smaller than Apple's latest A10 chip and has 256 times as many processors. The chip offers an 80x processor density advantage over high performance chips from Intel and Nvidia."

It's Time to ROCm!
AMD has been away from the HPC space for a while, but now they are coming back in a big way with an open software approach to GPU computing. The Radeon Open Compute Platform (ROCm) was born from the Boltzman Initiative announced last year at SC15. Now available on GitHub, the ROCm Platform bringing a rich foundation to advanced computing by better integrating the CPU and GPU to solve real-world problems.
"We are excited to present ROCm, the first open-source HPC/ultrascale-class platform for GPU computing that’s also programming-language independent. We are bringing the UNIX philosophy of choice, minimalism and modular software development to GPU computing. The new ROCm foundation lets you choose or even develop tools and a language run time for your application."

Using a fast, extensible hierarchical classification scheme to address dependence analysis, it discovers parallelism and annotates the source code with the most appropriate OpenMP & OpenACC directives. Published success stories have already shown the potential of the new technology with microbenchs and with the NAS Parallel Benchmark EP, covering fields such as finite elements, computational electromagnetics and sparse codes."

InfiniCortex and the Renaissance in Polish Supercomputing

"Over the past two years, InfiniCortex has clearly demonstrated that IB can perform over trans-continental distances, exploiting this technology to create a “Galaxy of Supercomputers” (a term coined by Marek Michalewicz and Yuefan Deng whose research focus is on mathematically optimal network topologies for supercomputers), a worldwide IB network spanning sites across Asia, Europe and North America. Initiated and led by A*STAR CRC (Agency for Science, Technology and Research - Computational Resource Centre in Singapore), the project hit its first major breakthrough at SuperComputing14 (SC14), showcasing a first-time-ever 100G IB transcontinental connection from Singapore to the SC14 venue in New Orleans (USA). This was made possible primarily thanks to the support of TATA Telecommunications, which provided the 100G trans-pacific link from Singapore to the US, and Obisidian Strategics, the Canadian manufacturer of the IB long-range equipment, that made available a number of units to be deployed in the participating sites."

In this deck, Gilad Shainer from Mellanox announces the world’s first HDR 200Gb/s data center interconnect solutions. "These 200Gb/s HDR InfiniBand solutions maintain Mellanox’s generation-ahead leadership while enabling customers and users to leverage an open, standards-based technology that maximizes application performance and scalability while minimizing overall data center total cost of ownership. Mellanox 200Gb/s HDR solutions will become generally available in 2017.
