Our hosted customer services are committed to a strict SLA, so we need a monitoring system which is high available and is able to distinguish specific regional network outages from SLA violations while still producing useful monitoring data. The satellites use diverse upstream providers and are located at different locations.
Therefor we instrument several open source tools to scrape and aggregate metrics from a customer perspective.
We built a setup with multiple Icinga2 nodes combined with a vary of prometheus exporter and instances which can operate completely independent. In a reporting purpose we decided to have a fully redundant monitoring setup with consistent data off all distributed satellites.

Combining them even allows for fully automatic service discovery!

Bringing Elliptic Curve Cryptography into the Mainstream
In this talk I will describe how CloudFlare helped take elliptic curve cryptography from a promising technology with low adoption to core part of the HTTPS revolution.
Two years ago, almost every public key used on the web for HTTPS was an RSA key. In 2013, the zmap team from University of Michigan scanned the entire web and found fewer than twenty non-RSA certificates. Over the next two years, CloudFlare took that number into the millions with the Universal SSL project. We’ll describe how using ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) keys instead of RSA keys played a crucial role in enabling this project. With Universal SSL, any website can become HTTPS-enabled for free.
Elliptic curve cryptography is not just useful for HTTPS, there are other protocols for which it provides an advantage over RSA. One of these is DNSSEC, the algorithm that lets administrators digitally sign DNS records for authenticity. DNSSEC been described as difficult deploy and dangerous because of the potential to abuse it in amplification/reflection attacks. In October 2015, CloudFlare launched its automated DNSSEC beta program. We’ll describe some of the tweaks we made to easily scale DNSSEC to millions of zones and how ECDSA keys helped solve some of the protocol’s major issues.

This talk will describe the changes which went into MongoDB 3.0 in order to allow storage engines to achieve their maximum concurrency potential. In MongoDB 3.0, concurrency control has been separated into two levels: top-level, which protects the database catalog, and storage engine-level, which allows each individual storage engine implementation to manage its own concurrency. We will start from the top and introduce the concept of multi-granularity locking and how it protects the database catalog. We will then explain how the MongoDB lock manager works and how it allows storage engines to manage their own concurrency control without imposing any additional overhead.

Developing a user-friendly OpenResty application

During our tech talk, we described a deployment of a production service in AWS and the best practices that we utilized, based on our experience with the HashiCorp Vault deployment. We talked about solutions provided by AWS which we utilized in our deployment. We also talked about our experiences with automation and maintaining infrastructure as code, as well as our impression of the tools we used for these purposes.

Streaming engines like Apache Flink are redefining ETL and data processing. Data can be extracted, transformed, filtered and written out in real-time with an ease matching that of batch processing. However the real challenge of matching the prowess of batch ETL remains in doing joins, in maintaining state and to have the data be paused or rested dynamically. Netflix has a microservices architecture. Different microservices serve and record different kind of user interactions with the product. Some of these live services generate millions of events per second, all carrying meaningful but often partial information. Things start to get exciting when we want to combine the events coming from one high-traffic microservice to another. Joining these raw events generates rich datasets that are used to train the machine learning models that serve Netflix recommendations. Historically we have done this joining of large volume data-sets in batch. However we asked ourselves if the data is being generated in real-time, why must it not be processed downstream in real time? Why wait a full day to get information from an event that was generated a few mins ago? In this talk, we will share how we solved a complex join of two high-volume event streams using Flink. We will talk about maintaining large state, fault tolerance of a stateful application and strategies for failure recovery.

For someone who does not usually work with AWS, deploying a service may often be akin to starting up a virtual machine and exposing it to the world. This might be a good educated guess in other contexts, but it's not adjusted to the AWS workflow, and sometimes may even be harmful.
During our tech talk, we described a deployment of a production service in AWS and the best practices that we utilized, based on our experience with the HashiCorp Vault deployment. We talked about solutions provided by AWS which we utilized in our deployment. We also talked about our experiences with automation and maintaining infrastructure as code, as well as our impression of the tools we used for these purposes.

Streaming engines like Apache Flink are redefining ETL and data processing. Data can be extracted, transformed, filtered and written out in real-time with an ease matching that of batch processing. However the real challenge of matching the prowess of batch ETL remains in doing joins, in maintaining state and to have the data be paused or rested dynamically. Netflix has a microservices architecture. Different microservices serve and record different kind of user interactions with the product. Some of these live services generate millions of events per second, all carrying meaningful but often partial information. Things start to get exciting when we want to combine the events coming from one high-traffic microservice to another. Joining these raw events generates rich datasets that are used to train the machine learning models that serve Netflix recommendations. Historically we have done this joining of large volume data-sets in batch. However we asked ourselves if the data is being generated in real-time, why must it not be processed downstream in real time? Why wait a full day to get information from an event that was generated a few mins ago? In this talk, we will share how we solved a complex join of two high-volume event streams using Flink. We will talk about maintaining large state, fault tolerance of a stateful application and strategies for failure recovery.

They walked through the prior claiming mechanism in the Ethereum Alarm Clock and talked about why ChronoLogic decided to do something different in Chronos. The hosts showed from a high level perspective, the current design of the mechanism and talked about steps for implementation.
In Chronos, ChronoLogic uses the DAY Token as a staking token for the TimeNodes to prioritize certain executions based on the amount of DAY held.
